Chapter 1 - The Lion at the Threshold

Julian Vance did not lower the riding crop. The slender strip of braided leather remained gripped tight in his manicured hand, though the cocky smirk on his face had withered into something brittle and thin.
Behind him, through the floor-to-ceiling French doors blown clean off their brass latches, the mountain fog poured into the ballroom like cold smoke. The headlights of five armored obsidian SUVs cut straight through the crystal chandeliers, turning every pendant into blinding spears of light.
And there stood Cole Montgomery.
Cole looked nothing like the men who inhabited the high-society circles of Blackwood Crest. He wore no Italian tuxedo, no gold cufflinks, no mask of civility. A heavy, oil-stained motorcycle leather jacket stretched across his broad shoulders, his knuckles scarred from a decade in the dark corners of overseas private military operations. His buzz cut was dusted with mist, his jaw set in stone.
Elena hung from the ceiling above the marble floor, her wrists cinched raw by coarse black nylon rope. Her knees brushed the cold tiles, her pastel ruffled gown torn, her cheek smeared with a slash of dried scarlet. When she lifted her chin, her swollen eyes met Cole’s.
A sharp, rattling breath escaped her cracked lips. ""Cole...""
""I said untie her,"" Cole said. His voice was not loud, but it possessed the subsonic weight of rolling thunder. It rattled the flutes of champagne in the guests’ trembling fingers.
Julian forced a hollow chuckle, taking a calculated step backward toward his personal security detail. ""Cole Montgomery. You have a lot of nerve barging into Vance territory. Your family made their fortune in dirty shipping lanes and grease. You don’t belong in these halls.""
""You touched my sister,"" Cole said, stepping across the shattered mahogany threshold. With each heavy boot-step, the ballroom grew deathly quiet. Even the blonde heiress, Victoria Sterling, shrank against a fluted marble pillar, her gold dress stained with the dark crimson splash of spilled Merlot.
Julian’s eyes flicked to his lead bodyguard, a six-foot-four enforcer named Harris. ""Put him down.""
Harris drew a suppressed automatic pistol from his shoulder holster with practiced speed. But before his finger could clear the trigger guard, Cole was already inside his guard. Cole's left hand locked around Harris's wrist, snapping the joint upward with a sickening crack. With his right, Cole drove an elbow directly into the man’s sternum. Harris collapsed onto the polished tile like a felled oak.
The remaining three bodyguards froze, their hands hovering over their holsters.
""Anyone else wants to breathe through a tube tonight?"" Cole asked without looking at them. His gaze stayed pinned entirely to Julian.
Julian retreated, his chest heaving, his immaculate facade completely fractured. ""You think you can intimidate me? Look around, Cole! The Vance family holds the debt on every ship your father docks in the harbor! If you strike me, your family burns!""
Cole reached into his jacket pocket. He didn't pull a weapon. He drew an antique pocket knife, flicked open the carbon steel blade, and stepped beneath the massive crystal chandelier.
He seized the black rope suspending Elena and sliced through it in a single motion.
Elena collapsed into his arms. Cole caught her with a tenderness that contradicted his lethal frame, cradling her bruised shoulders against his chest. ""I’ve got you, El. You’re safe.""
May you like
Elena buried her face into his leather lapel, sobbing into the cold leather. ""Julian... he didn't just want the shipping rights, Cole. He found the vault key. He knows about the fourth brother.""
Cole stiffened. Before he could speak, the distant wail of private security sirens began echoing up the canyon road—accompanied by the distinct, low rumble of a heavily modified V8 engine that didn't belong to the Vance convoy.
