Chapter 8 - The First Cry

Mark didn't hesitate. With steady, practiced precision born of pure desperation, he made the incision, working through the layers of tissue against the clock of a dying heart. Blood welled up instantly, but he clamped the major bleeders with hemostats, his hands moving with robotic speed.
Within ninety seconds, his fingers located the amniotic sac. He carefully ruptured the membrane and guided the tiny, fragile body of his daughter into the freezing air.
The baby was limp. Her skin was a pale, dusky blue. There was no cry.
Mark quickly cleared her airway with the suction bulb, wrapped her in a clean thermal foil blanket from the kit, and began two-finger chest compressions on her tiny chest, counting under his breath: "One, two, three... breathe... one, two, three... breathe."
For forty agonizing seconds, the world stopped spinning. Then, a sharp, fragile wail cut through the roaring wind—a sound so pure and defiant that it silenced the hellish violence around them.
