Chapter 14 - Surface Tension

The cold was an agonizing, crushing weight. It seeped into Victoria’s joints like liquid ice, threatening to paralyze her muscles before she could even kick toward the surface.
Her heavy evening dress, soaked with seawater, pulled her downward like an anchor. But her arms remained locked around Clara’s waist. Clara was kicking furiously, her small legs fighting the dark undertow with an astonishing will to live.
Above them, muzzle flashes lit the churning surface of the water in brief, surreal strobes of light. The bullets lost their lethal velocity within feet of entering the water, passing them like dying silver comets.
Victoria kicked with every ounce of strength left in her battered body. She clawed at the water with one arm, fighting the drag of her ruined gown, until her head finally broke through the surface into the howling night air.
Clara surfaced a second later, coughing violently, gasping for oxygen.
"I've got you," Victoria choked out, spitting salt water. "I've got you, Clara!"
They were fifty yards down-current from the pier. Behind them, Julian’s men were shouting and shining searchlights across the water, but the heavy rain and dense coastal fog obscured the small figures drifting toward the rocky shoreline of the industrial canal.
Victoria dragged Clara toward an old wooden breakwater covered in black barnacles. Her hands were shredded by the sharp shells as she hauled them both out of the freezing surf onto the mud bank.
They collapsed against the embankment, shivering violently, their breath ragged and shallow. Victoria wrapped her arms around Clara, trying desperately to share whatever body warmth she had left.
"We... we lost the papers," Clara whispered through chattering teeth, staring back at the dark bay.
Victoria looked down at her daughter. She reached into the soaking pocket of Arthur’s trench coat and pulled out the small, antique silver crest locket that Clara had placed in her palm hours ago at the gala.
She flicked the rusted clasp. The locket popped open.
Inside, micro-engraved into the polished inner silver casing, was the direct cryptographic key to the Vance offshore accounts—the true repository of the family empire, placed there by Helena before she died.

"We didn't lose anything," Victoria whispered, kissing Clara’s freezing forehead.
Behind them, the faint sound of sirens began to rise over the city, growing louder with every passing second.
