A BRIDGE ACROSS THE STORM / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The First Step

The drizzle clung to the asphalt like a thin sheet of glass. Leo bent down, his windbreaker rustling against the quiet hum of the rain. The kitten’s paws were tiny, black needles clinging tentatively to the coarse grain of the lumber. Beside him, Copper let out a soft, guttural whine, his tail oscillating in slow, measured sweeps.

""Easy now,"" Leo murmured, extending two fingers toward the animal.

The kitten did not recoil. It stepped into the dry crook of his palm, shivering so violently its ribs vibrated against his skin. Copper pressed his warm, wet nose against the creature's flank, breathing a hot gust of steam into the damp fur. A faint, almost imperceptible purr rattled deep within the tiny ribcage.

Leo stood up, cradling the ball of drenched fluff against his chest. He unzipped his rain jacket with one hand, tucking the stray inside against the dry fleece of his sweater. The bicycle leaned awkwardly against the wooden fence, its tires slick with fallen leaves.

""Good boy, Copper,"" Leo said, patting the dog’s flank. ""Let's get home before the downpour really starts.""

The sky was turning a bruised indigo, the light draining fast from the quiet suburban street. Copper turned sharply, leading the way toward the street exit, but suddenly halted at the mouth of the alley. His ears twitched forward, rotating like small radar dishes.

Leo took three strides to catch up, his sneaker squeaking against the wet sidewalk. ""Copper? What is it?""

The dog didn't move. He stood rigid, stare locked onto an abandoned utility shed fifty yards away behind an overgrown hedge. The wooden door hung half-open, creaking on rusty hinges in the autumn wind. From inside the shadow of the shed, another sound broke through the rhythm of the raindrops: a sharp, desperate cry, followed by the metallic clatter of falling cans.
