Chapter 1 - The Eviction Order

The air in the grand master bedroom smelled of cold lavender and bitter neglect. Eleanor Mitchell’s manicured fingers dug harshly into the silk duvet, her face twisted in a sneer that had terrorized Ava for nearly three long years. To Eleanor, Ava was nothing more than an inconvenient stray her late son Julian had brought home—a quiet girl meant to scrub floors, cook elaborate meals, and take the blame for Julian’s fatal reckless driving. But as Julian’s estate lawyer, Christian Vance, stepped across the threshold flanked by uniformed paramedics and county deputies, the silence in the room became deafening.

In Christian’s hand was an embossed legal document bearing the crisp scarlet seal of the probate court. Eleanor recoiled as if stung, her chest heaving beneath her emerald satin pajamas. ""You have no right to enter my home, Vance!"" she spat, clutching her string of pearls. Christian didn't flinch. His tailored double-breasted suit was pristine, his posture as rigid as iron. ""Mrs. Mitchell, you have five minutes to step out into the corridor before the deputies remove you,"" he said in a calm, lethal tone. ""This house never belonged to you. Under Julian’s sealed testament and private trust, every square foot of this estate, every offshore account, and the deed to this land belong solely to Ava.""

Ava lay beneath the covers, trembling as the plastic oxygen mask was fitted over her mouth and nose by the paramedics. Her head throbbed beneath the bloody bandage; the concussion Eleanor had dismissed as ""dramatics"" made the chandelier spin overhead. Her blurred vision locked onto Christian. He was her late husband's closest confidant, a man Eleanor claimed had deserted them after the crash.

""Julian wouldn't do this to his own mother!"" Eleanor screeched, her voice cracking as a deputy placed a firm hand on her elbow, ushering her away from the gilded bed. ""She manipulated him! She killed him!""

Christian tucked the decree beneath his arm and leaned down beside Ava, his expression softening with genuine grief and fierce resolve. ""Hold on, Ava,"" he whispered, pressing a small silver key into her cold, trembling palm. ""You’re safe now. But you need to know... Julian never died in that car crash by accident.""
