Chapter 2 - Chasing Footsteps in the Rain

The city street was a labyrinth of wet asphalt and blinding headlights. Rain poured down in relentless sheets, washing the gray sidewalks clean and turning neon reflections into blurred streaks of crimson and amber.

"Lily!" Daniel called out, his voice competing with the roar of city buses and honking yellow cabs.

His charcoal wool coat rapidly soaked through, clinging heavily to his broad shoulders. Panic seized his chest, a sharp, suffocating dread far more terrifying than any stock market collapse. A seven-year-old girl alone in midtown Manhattan was every parent’s worst nightmare.

He ran two blocks south toward Central Park, his leather shoes skidding on the slick pavement. Passing pedestrians huddled beneath umbrellas, offering irritated glances as he pushed through.

"Have you seen a little girl in a red dress?" Daniel stopped an elderly couple near a newsstand. "Dark red velvet, brown hair?"

The man shook his head pityingly. "No, son. Keep looking."

Daniel sprinted past an umbrella vendor, his breathing coming in ragged gasps. He thought of Lily’s tear-stained face when she dropped the locket into his hand. “If Mason is your kid now, maybe you should give him this too.” Her words cut deeper than any boardroom betrayal. For the past six months, since moving Victoria and Mason into their home, Daniel had bent over backward to accommodate Victoria’s demands, perpetually pushing Lily to "be understanding," to "share," and to "grow up." In doing so, he had orphaned her in her own home.

Near the corner of 59th and 5th, beneath the dripping awning of a vintage bookstore, he caught sight of an old brass awning and a faint glimmer of red.

Sitting upon an overturned crate beside the shop window, knees pulled tightly to her chest, sat Lily. Beside her knelt Arthur, the building's elderly retired doorman who spent his rainy afternoons reading paperbacks under the store's shelter. Arthur had his faded trench coat wrapped around the trembling girl.

"Lily!" Daniel stumbled forward, dropping to his knees on the wet concrete.
