Chapter 11 - The Map in the Dust

Sarah slammed her hand against the steering wheel of her old Chevy, keeping the pedal pinned to the floorboards. The truck groaned under the strain, its rusted suspension squeaking violently as it bounded over the washboard ruts.
Beside her, Toby didn't look at the scenery. He sat hunched over the center console, smoothing out a grease-stained topo map he had found inside the secret compartment of Jax’s abandoned motorcycle. Next to the map lay the small brass key Jax had left behind.
""He knew where they were taking him,"" Toby said, his voice steady despite the truck's violent bouncing. ""Look at the pen marks, Aunt Sarah. There's a circle around the Spanish Springs shaft.""
Sarah glanced over, her knuckles white on the wheel. ""Toby, that mine collapsed twenty years ago. If Silas took him up there, Jax was leading them into an ambush. You heard that blast five minutes ago. That wasn't thunder.""
""He isn't dead,"" Toby said simply. He tapped the map. ""Mom said you can't kill a man who's already lived through hell. She said he always finds a hole to crawl out of.""
Sarah swallowed the lump in her throat. She had spent a decade hating Jax for walking away, for leaving her sister to wither away in quiet poverty. But seeing the unyielding faith in Toby’s eyes made her realize something bitter: Elena hadn't lied to the boy. She had simply given him the legend of the man Jax could have been.
Suddenly, Sarah stomped on the brakes. The truck skidded sideways, tires kicking up sheets of red gravel before halting near the edge of a ravine.
Ahead, parked crookedly in the brush, was Silas’s secondary transport—a black SUV with its driver's door swung open. A lone Viper guard was standing on the ridge, scanning the burning wreckage of the ghost town below with binoculars. Hearing Sarah’s truck, the man turned, pulling a heavy revolver from his hip.
""Stay down!"" Sarah shouted, reaching behind her seat for the twelve-gauge.
Before she could raise the barrel, Toby lunged across the bench seat, leaned on the truck's heavy horn, and yanked the emergency brake release. The Chevy rolled forward with a sickening thud, smashing directly into the open door of the SUV, pinning the guard's legs against the metal frame.
The man dropped the gun, howling in agony.
Sarah didn't hesitate. She kicked her door open, leveled the shotgun at the trapped man's face, and cocked the slide. ""Talk. Where is Jax?""

The guard, sobbing in pain, pointed a trembling finger down the ravine toward the smoking mouth of the mine. ""Underground... Silas is dead, the building blew... but the whole damn shaft caved in. Ain't nobody breathing down there.""
Toby scrambled out of the truck, ignoring Sarah's shout, and bolted down the rocky slope toward the smoking ruins.
