Chapter 1 - The Closet Latch

The louvered slats of the hallway closet carved Mark’s vision into thin, horizontal bars of light. His knees were pressed hard against the wooden door frame, folded towels cushioning the elbows he used to steady his shaking hands. Through the tiny gap, his smartphone screen stayed active, the red recording timer silently ticking away seconds in the upper-right corner. His breath fogged slightly against the polished screen, each exhalation held until his chest burned with an unbearable pressure. In the open floorplan of the kitchen barely twelve feet away, his seven-year-old daughter, Lily, stood frozen in her oversized white shirt, her thin fingers clutching the seam of her jeans.
Ashley slammed the brown grocery bag onto the quartz counter. The sound cracked through the quiet suburban house like a gunshot. She smoothed the emerald knit of her sweater with deliberate precision, her manicured nails catching the morning light before her gaze snapped toward Lily. ""Did you tell your father anything?"" Ashley asked, her voice calm, almost musical, with a terrifying edge of calculated control. Lily shook her head once, her blonde hair falling across red-rimmed eyes. Mark watched his little girl’s shoulders hitch, remembering the circular bruises on her forearm that she had shown him just an hour earlier in the hallway.

Ashley didn't accept the silence. She reached into a side pocket of her leather tote and pulled out a heavy manila folder. Sliding it across the dining table with a sharp scrape, she splayed her hand over the title printed in bold black ink: Residential Behavioral Program. ""Your dad already agreed to this,"" Ashley said coldly, leaning down until her face was inches from Lily’s. ""You leave on Friday. No more lies. No more pathetic little tantrums."" Lily broke into silent, shuddering sobs, her head bowed in complete defeat. Inside the dark recess of the closet, Mark felt an electric rage boil behind his temples.
He shifted his weight slightly to push the door open, but the sole of his boot slipped on the smooth hardwood flooring behind the linen stack. The closet latch emitted a tiny, metallic click. Across the room, Ashley froze mid-sentence. Her posture went rigid, her head snapping toward the linen closet. She stared directly through the slats, her green eyes widening as the camera's faint lens reflection caught the overhead recessed light.
