Chapter 8 - The Confrontation Outside

Rehabilitation was not a straight line. On Thursday, Toby experienced a severe spike in pain from deep bone bruising in his pelvis, resulting in uncontrollable sobbing and nausea.

Marcus found himself pacing the hallway outside the nurses' station while the medical team administered analgesics.

Down the corridor walked Julian Vance, Marcus’s chief operating officer and long-time business partner. Julian wore a crisp charcoal three-piece suit, his polished brogues clicking loudly on the linoleum.

"Marcus," Julian said, lowering his voice as he approached. "I’ve been calling your cell. The Singapore syndicate is threatening to pull their equity if we don't finalize the logistics merger by five o'clock today. You need to be in the boardroom. We have forty million on the table."

Marcus stopped. He looked at Julian, a man he had worked with for twelve years, and felt a strange, profound detachment. The urgent jargon—syndicate, equity, leverage—sounded like a dead language.

"Postpone the closing," Marcus said flatly.

Julian stared at him, incredulous. "Postpone? Marcus, they won't wait. If you walk away, the deal falls apart."

Marcus stepped closer, towering over his COO. "My son is inside that room screaming in pain because a car shattered his bones. If Singapore cannot wait seventy-two hours, let them take their money elsewhere."

"Are you insane?" Julian hissed. "You built this company from a garage! You sacrificed everything for it!"

"Yes," Marcus said softly, his voice chillingly calm. "I sacrificed everything. Including the first six years of his childhood. I’m not paying that tax anymore, Julian. Run the meeting yourself, offer them our standard terms, or let the deal die. I am not leaving this floor."

Julian looked into Marcus's eyes, realizing the steel resolve he was seeing wasn't business obstinacy; it was a father claiming his life back. Without another word, Julian nodded once, turned on his heel, and walked away.

Marcus turned back toward Room 412, took a deep breath, and walked inside.
