Chapter 1 - The Weight on Cold Marble

The chill of the Italian marble floor seeped through the thin fabric of Clara’s gray scrubs, biting deep into her bruised skin. Every motion of dragging the blue microfiber cloth across the glossy surface sent a dull, throbbing spike of agony straight into her right knee, where the heavy metal and nylon stabilizing brace held her shattered joint in place. She bit her lower lip until she tasted the faint, metallic tang of blood, refusing to let even a whimper escape into the quiet, echoing cavern of the Vance Tower’s executive penthouse floor.

At midnight, the city of Seattle sprawled outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows like a sea of diamonds, oblivious to the quiet desperation beneath its glittering heights. Clara had taken the overnight custodial shift because the differential paid two dollars more an hour—money that barely covered her mother’s dialysis medication and the overdue rent notice crumpled in her pocket. Being okay was a luxury she simply couldn’t afford.

A rhythmic click of heavy claws echoed down the corridor, followed by slow, measured footsteps. Clara turned her head carefully, wiping a stray lock of brown hair from her forehead with the back of a damp wrist. Emerging from the warm shadows of the architectural corridor was Titan, a massive black Cane Corso whose muscular frame radiated raw, untamed power. Behind the beast walked Alexander Vance—the reclusive, formidable CEO whose name alone made boardrooms tremble across three continents. Dressed in a sharply tailored charcoal suit beneath an open cashmere overcoat, his presence commanded absolute silence.

Instead of barking or lunging, Titan slowed his lumbering stride. The massive canine walked deliberately toward Clara, stopping inches from her cleaning bucket. He lowered his enormous head, sniffing the scent of lemon disinfectant and worn leather, before gently pressing his damp nose against her cheek. Then, with deliberate, uncanny gentleness, Titan lifted a heavy paw and rested it softly beside Clara’s brace.

"You’re gonna get me fired, handsome," Clara whispered, a genuine, bittersweet smile breaking through her exhaustion as her trembling fingers cupped the dog's velvety muzzle.

The footsteps stopped right beside her. Alexander Vance crouched down with fluid, effortless grace, bringing himself down to her level. His dark eyes, usually cold enough to freeze glass, traced the contours of her pale, drawn face and settled on the thick orthopedic brace locked around her leg. A tattoo of intricate black ink peeked from beneath his pristine white shirt cuff.

"Are you okay?" Alexander asked, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through her chest.

"No," Clara confessed before her filter could stop her, her voice trembling slightly. "But being okay doesn't pay rent."

Alexander didn't blink. His jaw hardened, a lethal stillness settling over his features. "Who put you on this floor?"

Before Clara could answer, heavy, frantic footsteps scrambled from the corner elevator bank. Howard, the night operations manager, burst into the hallway clutching a clipboard to his chest like a shield, his face pale with sudden panic. "Mr. Vance! She... she’s just slow! I was already fixing it—"

"Step away from her," Alexander commanded, his voice barely louder than a whisper, yet carrying the force of a detonating charge.

May you like

Alexander rose slowly to his full height, his hand coming to rest on Titan’s head. Titan let out a low, rumbling growl that vibrated against the marble floor, staring Howard down. Howard froze, swallowing hard as he clutched the clipboard.

"Mr. Vance, please," Howard stammered, his eyes darting wildly. "You don't understand who she actually is..."
