Chapter 14 - The Return of the Dawn
Two days later, the rain had completely washed away the autumn mud, leaving the mountain sky brilliant, clear, and impossibly blue.
Nora sat on the veranda steps of the convent, wrapped in a warm wool shawl. The physical pain in her ribs had dulled to a manageable ache, but the profound psychological weight of the last three years had vanished entirely. The federal filings had gone public that morning. The front pages of every major newspaper featured the indictments of Vance Pharmaceuticals' executive board, while clinical regulators had already begun the process of suspending the harmful drug’s distribution.
Her father’s name had been cleared. The newspapers called him a whistleblower of unmatched courage, but to Nora, he was simply the gentle man who had taught her how to navigate by the stars and told her that honesty was the only true sanctuary a human soul ever owned.
A gentle hand rested on her shoulder. Sister Beatrice sat down beside her, holding two ceramic mugs of steaming peppermint tea.
“Frank called from Pittsburgh,” Beatrice said with a soft smile. “He’s safe. Miss Lin’s office took his statement and provided him with federal protection until the trial. He told me to tell you that he found an old hardware store that still sells die-cast car models.”
Nora let out a quiet laugh—the first real, unburdened laugh she had felt in her chest since before the crash on Route 9.
Down in the cloister courtyard, Mia was kneeling on the flagstones near the fountain. She was laughing, her face smeared with a smudge of garden dirt, chasing a ginger convent cat around the dry basin. The child’s eyes were bright, free from the terror that had shadowed them under the hospital bed.

“You gave her her life back, Nora,” Beatrice murmured.
“We gave each other our lives back,” Nora corrected softly. “If she hadn’t stood up to Victoria in that room... if she hadn't held that silence... I never would have made it out from under that bed.”
