Chapter 9 - Recorded in Stone

The silence was deafening. Julian’s gaze bored into Clara with murder in his eyes.

“You recorded me?” he whispered, his voice trembling with disbelief. “In our own home? In our bed?”

“Never in bed, Julian. You haven’t touched me in two years,” Clara answered without a shred of shame. “I recorded you in the study while you were shouting at your Swiss brokers. I recorded you when you told Eleanor that the factory workers were ‘sub-human parasites’ who didn’t deserve Arthur’s legacy. And I recorded you last night, when you laughed about how easy it was to leave me with the debt while you started over in Zurich.”

Eleanor looked up from the table, her eyes venomous as she stared at Clara. “You treacherous viper. We took you off the street. We gave you everything!”

“You gave me a cage,” Clara shot back, her voice ringing out clear and absolute. “You gave me a life of endless humiliation, enduring your insults, cleaning up your emotional filth, and watching your family devour itself in greed. I earned every penny I ever spent in this house by keeping Julian out of prison for five years. But tonight, the retainer expires.”

Agent Hayes signaled to the officers behind her. “Eleanor Vance, Julian Vance, you are both under arrest. Please step away from the table and keep your hands where we can see them.”

Julian made a sudden, desperate movement. He didn't run toward the door; he lunged directly at Clara, his hands reaching for her throat, his face distorted into a mask of pure rage. “I’ll kill you! I’ll tear you apart before I let you ruin me!”

Marcus reacted instantly, tackling Julian around the waist and driving him hard against the heavy sideboard. Silver platters, crystal decanters, and porcelain serving dishes crashed to the floor, shattering into thousands of glittering, jagged pieces. The officers rushed forward, drawing their batons and forcing Julian face-down onto the floor amidst the debris.

Clara stood completely still, not yielding an inch. She looked down at her husband as the cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists.
