Chapter 11 - The Vault of Shadows

Dominic pushed the heavy maintenance door open with extreme caution, keeping his weapon raised. The corridor beyond was lined with polished white tile, illuminated by sterile fluorescent strips. This was the sub-basement of Meridian Private Bank, a secure level beneath the main vaults, reserved for high-value private clients who demanded absolute discretion.

No alarms sounded. The quiet was unnatural, almost suffocating.

"The locker is 804," Elena whispered, her voice growing weaker by the minute. She was losing too much blood; her skin was clammy, and her lips had taken on a faint bluish tint. Dominic knew she had less than an hour before hypovolemic shock took her permanently.

He carried her down the gleaming hallway, passing rows of reinforced security cages until they reached the private deposit chamber. The room was lined from floor to ceiling with brushed-steel lockboxes, pristine and cold.

In the center of the room, seated calmly in a high-backed leather chair, sat an elderly man in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit. His silver hair was immaculately combed, and his hands rested comfortably on a gold-headed cane.

Chairman Thomas Sterling.

Flanking him were four heavily armed private security guards in clean black uniforms, their assault rifles leveled at Dominic’s chest the moment he crossed the threshold.

"I must applaud you, Dominic," Sterling said, his voice smooth, aristocratic, and utterly devoid of emotion. "Surviving Vance was impressive. Sacrificing your faithful dog Viktor in the tunnels was predictable. But bringing my wayward daughter directly to me? That is an unexpected courtesy."

Elena stiffened in Dominic's arms, her eyes wide with terror and disgust. "Father..."

"Quiet, Elena," Sterling snapped, not even looking at her face, regarding her as one might regard an unwashed stray dog. "You have caused an immense amount of administrative inconvenience. Dean was a fool who thought he had a conscience. You are a fool who thought she could escape her bloodline."

Dominic stepped forward, his expression carved from stone, his weapon still aimed directly between Sterling’s eyes despite the four rifles aimed at his own heart.

"You burned my docks, Thomas," Dominic said softly. "You broke the treaty that has kept this city peaceful for twenty years."

Sterling chuckled, a dry, grating sound. "Peace is unprofitable, Dominic. The federal authorities are closing in on all of us. When they arrive, they will find your ruins, Vance's body, and the tragic remains of my poor daughter, brutally murdered by your syndicate. Meanwhile, I will be halfway to Switzerland with complete immunity and two billion dollars in state-backed bonds."

Sterling extended an open, manicured hand. "Give me the titanium cylinder, Dominic. And I will allow you to choose how you die."
