Chapter 14 - The Final Breath

Dante carried Lily down the stairs, falling to his knees beside the dying woman who had shaped his family's fate.
Elena was fading fast. Her skin was the color of chalk, her lips stained purple with blood. The silver medallion around her neck was covered in dark crimson.
"Elena..." Dante reached out, his hand trembling as he touched her cold forehead. "Hold on. I'll get a tourniquet. We can get you to the boat."
Elena forced a faint, bloody smile, shaking her head weakly. "There is... no boat for me, Dante. My oath... is fulfilled."
Grace held Elena’s fingers tightly against her small cheek. For the first time that night, the cold mask slipped from the nine-year-old’s face. A single tear tracked through the dried blood on Grace's cheek. "Teacher. Don't go."
Elena looked up at the girl with a tenderness she had never shown during their brutal training sessions. She reached up with her trembling, bloodied thumb, gently wiping the tear away.
"You don't cry... Little Raven," Elena whispered, her breath rattling in her chest. "Tears blur the target. You are... ready. Stronger than your mother... stronger than the Covenant."
Elena turned her dying gaze to Dante. Her grip on Grace’s hand tightened with the last ounce of her strength.
"The elders... know she survived," Elena gasped, coughing up another mouthful of blood. "Julian was only... the herald. The Council... will send the Black Fleet. Take the girls... go north. Find the monastery in... Bergen..."
"I'll protect them," Dante vowed, his voice cracking. "I swear on Anna's soul."
Elena smiled. Her eyes drifted toward the vaulted ceiling, as if seeing something beyond the blood-stained stone. "Intention... comes before sound."
Her hand went limp in Grace’s grasp. Her head rolled to the side, her breathing stopping forever.

Grace did not weep again. She carefully took the silver medallion from Elena's neck, slipping the chain over her own head, letting the cold twin blades rest against her chest.
"We have to go, Father," Grace said, her voice dropping back into an icy, steady register. "Someone is approaching the perimeter."
