Chapter 13 - The Matriarch’s Sacrifice

""Go, Vivienne! Take your sister and never come back!"" Eleanor’s voice cut through the roaring inferno with astonishing clarity. For the first time in Vivienne’s life, Eleanor looked at her daughters not as chess pieces, but with the raw, protective instinct of a mother facing the end. With a feral scream, Eleanor brought the heavy steel cylinder down upon the main electrical junction box beneath the console, severing the high-voltage cables.

A blinding blue arc of electricity erupted, violently throwing Julian and Arthur apart as the entire vault caught fire in an instantaneous flashover. The blast wave threw Vivienne and Camille backward into the dark mouth of the concrete escape hatch. Vivienne watched in horror as the heavy steel emergency blast gate slid downward on automated tracks, sealing Eleanor, Arthur, and Julian inside the flaming tomb. The last image burned into Vivienne’s mind was Eleanor standing amidst the flames, her arms outstretched, blocking Julian from reaching the tunnel.

The heavy steel door slammed shut with a finality that shook the foundation of the estate. Camille was weeping hysterically, her nails digging into Vivienne’s arm. Vivienne knew they had no time to mourn; the concrete shaft was heating rapidly, and the smell of smoke was seeping through the ventilation seals. She pulled Camille to her feet, supporting her sister’s weight as they stumbled through the narrow, unlit tunnel that sloped upward toward the estate’s outer perimeter.
