BOUND BY BLOOD AND IRON / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Vance Legacy

In a single, fluid motion, Marcus stepped forward, his shotgun blasting a heavy slug straight into Jesse’s right shoulder. The impact threw Jesse backward into the mud, his revolver flying harmlessly into the dark grass.

Sarah collapsed onto the driveway, gasping for air.

"Mom!" Tyler bolted across the open space, sliding on his knees into the mud, wrapping his arms around her and shielding her body with his own.

Wade scrambled to his feet, covered in dirt, his rifle lost in the wreckage of the collision. He drew a long hunting knife from his belt, his eyes wild with desperate rage, lunging straight at Marcus.

Marcus didn't even bother raising the shotgun. He sidestepped the blade with the practiced precision of a veteran street fighter, grabbed Wade’s wrist, and twisted it until the bone snapped with a sickening pop. Wade screamed in agony as Marcus drove a heavy knee into his ribs, followed by a crushing right cross that dropped the gang leader face-first into the freezing mud, unconscious.

Through the rain, the deafening roar of half a dozen motorcycles tore through the valley. Bishop, Tank, and four other Iron Brotherhood riders swarmed the driveway, their headlights cutting through the rising smoke, completely encircling the scene.

Bishop dismounted, walking over to Marcus with a cold grin. "Looks like you had all the fun without us."

"Secure them," Marcus said, gesturing toward the two broken men in the mud. "Call Sheriff Miller. Tell him his town’s trash is ready for collection."

Marcus walked quickly over to his wrecked truck. Inside, Toby had fallen into the footwell from the impact, but he was grinning despite a bruise on his cheek. Marcus reached in, his massive arms lifting Toby gently out of the cab and setting him carefully back into his wheelchair, which Bishop brought from the truck bed.

Sarah, leaning heavily against Tyler, looked up through her tears at Marcus, and then down at the boy in the wheelchair.

"Toby...?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Toby looked at the woman who had shared an unspoken past with his mother. He offered a small, tired nod. "Hi, Sarah."

Tyler stood between them, covered in mud and soot, his varsity arrogance completely shattered, replaced by the humble gaze of someone who had just witnessed what true strength looked like. He stepped beside Toby's chair, slowly placing a hand on his younger brother's shoulder.

"He saved my life, Mom," Tyler said, his voice thick with emotion. "Both of them did."

Marcus looked at his two sons—one broken by arrogance and rebuilt by truth, the other physically bound but possessing the unbreakable heart of a warrior. Behind them, the fire department’s sirens wailed in the distance, their lights piercing the dying storm.

Marcus placed one heavy hand on Tyler's neck and the other on Toby's shoulder, pulling both boys close into the shelter of his broad chest.

"The debt is paid," Marcus said quietly into the night air. "From tonight on, we stand together."
