Chapter 1 - The Broken Vow

The double oak doors slammed against the wall with a hollow thud that echoed through the penthouse suite. Mark’s chest rose and fell beneath his three-piece charcoal suit, his breath catching in his throat as his eyes adjusted to the dim, amber glow of the chandelier. Flowers, silk ribbons, and half-empty flutes of champagne littered the room—a celebration frozen in time. Then, his gaze dropped to the floor.

Five-year-old Lily sat crumpled on the plush beige carpet, her silver flower girl dress bunched around her trembling knees. Around her small, pale ankle clamped a thick band of polished steel. A cold link chain stretched taut, trailing directly up into the manicured, diamond-ringed hand of the woman standing over her.

Victoria stood tall in her strapless ivory wedding gown. Her sculpted blonde hair remained immaculate, not a strand out of place. Her expression was devoid of fear, guilt, or remorse; she looked as serene as a statue carved from winter ice.

""Daddy..."" Lily wept, her breath coming in jagged, fragile gasps. Blood seeped from a raw red scrape beneath the iron ring. ""Daddy, please...""

Mark took a step forward, his polished shoes rooting into the floor as a single tear escaped his eye, burning down his stubbled cheek. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. ""What did you do to her?"" he whispered, his voice trembling with a deadly edge. ""Victoria... what is this?""

Victoria didn't flinch. Her grip on the chain remained rock-steady. ""She wouldn't stop crying about her mother,"" Victoria said softly, her tone conversational, almost bored. ""She was going to ruin my walk down the aisle. A trained dog learns its place, Mark. Children are no different. She stays where she belongs until the reception is over.""

Mark’s vision blurred with red. The woman he thought was his salvation after his wife’s death was nothing more than a monster wrapped in silk. He closed the distance between them until he was breathing her expensive perfume, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth groaned.

""We are finished,"" Mark rasped, his voice dropping into a guttural growl.

Victoria’s lips curved into a cold, contemptuous smirk. ""Are we? Look behind you, Mark.""

Before Mark could turn, the cold barrel of a gun pressed firmly into the base of his skull.
