Chapter 3 - Papers in the Dirt

""Trespassing notices were served three weeks ago, Miss Miller,"" Vance announced, his voice carrying clearly over the distant rumbling of the wind through the tall prairie grass. He walked with calculated strides, completely ignoring the massive bull pacing behind the splintered timber just yards away.

Nora leaned against the barn frame, each breath feeling like a jagged knife dragging along her lungs. ""We had sixty days on the extension. Judge Alvarez signed it himself before the spring planting.""

Vance smiled thinly, stopping just outside the muddy reach of the outer pen. ""Judge Alvarez stepped down on Friday due to health reasons. His docket was reassigned this morning to the municipal district. The Miller Ranch loan default has been accelerated, effective noon today. Every head of cattle, every outbuilding, and every square foot of topsoil now belongs to the Ridgecrest Valley Trust.""

Cal stepped forward, wiping grime off his brow with a greasy forearm. ""You can't do that while her father is still in the county clinic. He built this herd sixty years ago!""

""Your father signed the collateral deed, Nora,"" Vance replied, looking past Cal as though he didn't exist. He dropped the court summons onto an overturned feed trough, anchoring it with a rusted horseshoe. ""The livestock transport is already waiting down by the highway cutoff. We’re clearing the pens by nightfall. If this bull isn't loaded onto our trailer within two hours, the county will put him down as a dangerous nuisance.""

Nora’s gaze drifted from the pristine white paper on the trough to Goliath’s foaming muzzle. The bull had nearly killed her minutes earlier, yet he was the cornerstone of three generations of her family’s bloodline. But as she watched Vance’s cold, confident posture, she noticed something odd—the official court document had a handwritten addendum scrawled across the margin, signed not by a judge, but by her own father's trembling hand.
