Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Fury

Commander Marcus Vance stepped across the threshold, shutting the heavy mahogany door until the brass latch clicked into place. The muffling of the banquet laughter outside felt like a descent into suffocating silence. Ava’s whisper—naming Harlan Vance’s honored patron, the petrochemical titan Viktor Sterling—hung in the air like a lethal charge.

Marcus dropped to one knee on the cold hardwood floor, setting aside the crisp discipline instilled by fifteen years of naval service. His fingers hovered beside her bare shoulder, terrified that even a gentle touch would shatter whatever fragile piece of her was holding together. The dark purple contusions along Ava’s cheek and down her legs were fresh, swollen, and brutal. She pulled the torn black silk tighter against her collarbone, shuddering as a single sob tore through her chest.

""He asked me to deliver his coat,"" Ava murmured, her voice raw, barely carrying over the hum of the vanity lights. ""He said you were waiting for him in the lower gallery. When I stepped inside his private suite, he locked the deadbolt. He said... he said your medals meant nothing. That money owns the uniform, and money takes whatever it looks at.""

Marcus closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. Inside his mind, a cold red fury ignited, incinerating every oath of conduct and chain-of-command protocol he had lived by. He stood up slowly, the gold embroidery on his crisp white epaulets gleaming beneath the mirror lights.

""Stay here, Ava,"" Marcus said, his tone entirely level, carrying a quiet violence far more terrifying than a shout. ""Don't let anyone in. Lock the bolt behind me.""

Ava caught the edge of his immaculate white sleeve. ""Marcus, no. Look at the dignitaries out there. Senators, fleet admirals. Sterling funds half your defense contracts. You destroy him here, and they will brand you a traitor.""

Marcus gently detached her fingers from his cuff, sliding a heavy silver signet ring off his thumb and pressing it into her palm. ""Let them.""

He turned the handle, slipped through the gap into the blinding chandelier glare of the hallway, and marched straight toward the sound of applause. As he turned the final corridor toward the grand podium, he saw Sterling raising a champagne flute—flanked by Marcus’s own commanding officer.
