Chapter 7 - The Unveiling

Arthur recovered his composure quickly, though a faint sheen of perspiration broke out across his temples. He forced a condescending, paternal smile.
"Genevieve, dear," he said smoothly, spreading his hands. "You shouldn't be here. You’ve been through an incredible trauma. We were just discussing how best to protect you while you recover."
"You were discussing how to steal my grandfather's company before his body gets cold," she replied, her tone conversational, yet deadly. "Sit down, Julian. Keep your hand down, Marcus. The meeting has officially begun."
"This is an executive session, young lady," sneered Roger Sterling, an allied director and Victoria Sterling's uncle. "You hold no official title here. You have no standing until the probate court verifies your lineage!"
Genevieve turned her gaze to Roger. The man withered slightly under the intensity of her stare. "Captain Osbert," she commanded softly.
"Ma'am." Douglas stepped forward, unzipping a leather portfolio. He produced a set of certified, red-ribboned documents bearing the official seal of the United States Maritime Commission and the New York Surrogate's Court.
"At zero-six-hundred this morning," Douglas announced, his baritone filling the room, "the Supreme Court of New York validated the unconditional transfer of the Alexander Vance Memorial Trust directly to Genevieve Vance. She currently controls forty-two point eight percent of the voting shares of Vance Holdings. Furthermore, Grand Admiral Alistair Vance has formally invoked the Line of Command protocol, transferring all executive veto powers to her with immediate effect."
Douglas placed the original notarized document directly in front of Arthur.
Arthur glanced at the signatures, and the color drained from his face. "This is impossible. Alistair was sedated—"
"Alistair is currently having breakfast on his terrace in Newport, watching the morning news," Genevieve interrupted, taking her seat in the Chairman’s chair. She rested her elbows on the armrests, interlacing her fingers. "He sends his regards, Arthur. He particularly enjoyed your speech at the club last night. The part where you called him a 'stubborn corpse' was a delightful touch."
The silence in the room became absolute. The temperature seemed to drop ten degrees.
Arthur’s eyes darted frantically around the table. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Of course you don't," Genevieve said. She gestured to the large presentation screen mounted on the north wall. "Douglas, let's refresh my uncle's memory."
Douglas tapped his tablet. The screen flickered to life, displaying crystal-clear, high-definition security footage taken from the ceiling of the private dining room beneath the Financial District. The audio was pristine:
Arthur's voice echoed through the speakers: 'My brother Alistair is dying... The management trust defaults to the secondary line. That is me.'
Then Richard Cole's voice: 'What are you asking us to do?'
Arthur's reply: 'She must not arrive... We paint her as a calculating sociopath who fabricated her identity... Once the review is opened, I assume the chair. And my first act as managing director will be to forgive your family's debt in full.'
Gasps erupted around the table. Julian Croft slammed his fist onto the mahogany. "Treason! Corporate espionage and conspiracy against the trust!"
Roger Sterling turned white as a sheet, quietly shrinking back into his leather chair, trying to make himself invisible.
Arthur stood up so violently his chair tipped backward, crashing onto the carpet. "This is illegally obtained footage! It is inadmissible! I am a managing partner of this firm!"
"The footage was gathered under a federal warrant issued by the Department of Justice," Genevieve stated calmly, motioning to the two marshals standing by the door. "Vance Maritime holds Tier-One national defense contracts, Arthur. Conspiracy to commit corporate sabotage against our logistics network is not a civil dispute. It is an act of economic treason."
The two federal marshals stepped forward, their hands resting near their sidearms. The lead marshal produced a set of steel handcuffs.
"Arthur Vance," the marshal announced, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, interstate extortion, and attempted vehicular manslaughter."
"Manslaughter?!" Arthur screamed, backing away toward the panoramic window. "You're insane! I didn't try to kill anyone!"
"The driver of the truck on Route 9 started talking twenty minutes ago," Genevieve said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "He gave up the offshore accounts, Uncle. He gave up the wire routing. He gave up your signature."
Arthur looked at the faces around the table. The allies he had bought, the directors who had just raised their hands for him, looked away in disgust. He was an isolated, cornered animal.
As the marshals clamped the cold steel around Arthur’s wrists, he glared at Genevieve with rabid hatred. "You think you've won? You think you can run this empire, you little bitch? Richard Cole will destroy you in the press! He has the affidavit! The whole world thinks you're a fraud!"
Genevieve stood up slowly, smoothing the lapels of her white suit. "Richard Cole is currently waiting in my lobby downstairs, Arthur. He thinks he's here to negotiate."
May you like
She smiled, a cold, predatory expression that chilled every director in the room.
"Bring him up," she commanded.
