Chapter 12 - The Shadows of the Port

Two days passed. Elena Miller’s recovery at Gabriel’s private estate was swift, though the emotional scars remained tender. With proper food, clean IV fluids, and warm surroundings, color returned to her cheeks. Mia spent her afternoons exploring the vast estate gardens, accompanied everywhere by Marco, who had unexpectedly traded his cold assassin demeanor for the role of a watchful, patient uncle.
Elena sat in the library, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at her daughter laughing on the lawn. Gabriel entered silently, carrying a thick file.
"The apartment on Tenth Avenue is gone," Gabriel said gently, stopping beside her. "I had the entire building demolished. The tenants have been relocated to new apartments in the midtown district, rent covered for five years."
Elena turned to him, tears welling in her eyes. "Mr. Vance... Gabriel. How will I ever repay this? I am just a cleaner. I know how to mop floors and wash laundry. I don't belong in this world."
"You don't owe me a debt, Elena. Your daughter paid it in advance when she walked into my office without fear." Gabriel handed her the file. "These are the deeds to a brownstone on the Upper East Side. It’s registered in your name. There is a private school two blocks away that has already accepted Mia for the fall semester."
Elena touched the embossed paper, her fingers trembling. "This is too much... people like us don't get happy endings like this. It feels like a dream I will wake up from."
Before Gabriel could reply, Marco stepped into the library, his face tense.
"Boss," Marco said, glancing briefly at Elena. "We have a situation at Pier 44. A freighter from Belfast just docked. It wasn't cleared through our channels."
Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. "Carroway?"
"No," Marco said, his voice lowering. "Liam Carroway is still in the hospital with his knee in a brace. This is his older brother, Declan Carroway. He flew in from Dublin this morning. He brought twenty men from the old organization. They seized the terminal and took three of our dock supervisors hostage."
Elena caught the sudden shift in the room's energy. She saw the darkness return to Gabriel’s posture, the lethal authority snapping back into place like armor.
"They want a meeting," Marco continued. "Declan said if you don't return the West Side leases and pay a five-million-dollar restitution for Liam's leg by midnight, he will hang our men from the crane booms and burn the docks to the water."
Elena gasped, stepping toward Gabriel. "Gabriel, no... this is because of me. Because of our building."
Gabriel looked down at her, his expression serene, almost comforting.
May you like
"No, Elena," he said softly. "This is because men like Declan Carroway believe they can rule through fear alone. They forgot that every empire built on cruelty eventually meets someone who has nothing left to lose."
He turned to Marco. "Assemble the Vanguard. Midnight is too late. We go to Pier 44 now."
