Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth

Julian remained crouched beside the galvanized steel tub, his fingertips still grazing Clara’s trembling wrist. The damp concrete floor of the subterranean garage seeped chill through his tailored trousers, but the cold settling into his marrow was born of pure disgust. Behind him, Eleanor’s hand remained pressed against her parted lips, her diamond engagement ring catching the faint flicker of overhead fluorescent tubes. Her elegant ivory slip dress, intended for a celebratory penthouse dinner, looked grotesque amidst the stagnant oil puddles and rust.

""Clara,"" Julian murmured, his voice deadly low, a velvet sheath hiding a steel blade. ""Look at me. Are you certain?""

The maid’s eyes, swollen and reddened by tears, shifted past his shoulder toward Eleanor. A shudder wracked Clara’s petite frame, making the thick jute ropes bite deeper into her exposed collarbones. ""She said... she said I saw too much,"" Clara choked out, water sloshing weakly around her knees. ""She had two men wait by my quarters. They put a bag over my head... brought me down here to freeze.""

Julian stood up slowly, deliberately. Every inch of his six-foot-two frame radiated an icy, coiled violence. He did not yell. He did not reach for a weapon. He simply turned, his dark eyes locking onto Eleanor’s pale face.

Eleanor took a ragged step backward, the thin strap of her silk dress slipping slightly over her shoulder. ""Julian, darling, listen to me,"" she stammered, her voice shaking violently. ""She’s lying! She’s trying to destroy us. Why would you believe a domestic servant over your fiancée?""

""Because,"" Julian said, closing the distance between them with slow, predatory strides, ""she has no reason to bleed for a lie. But you have every reason to kill for your secrets.""

Eleanor backed into the side of the sleek black sedan. With nowhere left to run, her gaze darted to the dark ramp leading to the upper streets. Suddenly, the low rumble of heavy tires echoed down the spiral driveway, breaking the heavy silence. Two black SUVs descended into the garage, blocking the exit, their high beams blinding them in stark, white light.
