Chapter 9 - Ambush in the Dark

Back at Crestview Manor, the clock struck 2:00 AM.
The sprawling estate was cloaked in dense, rolling fog coming off the river. Inside her childhood bedroom, Maya was fast asleep, wrapped safely in thick blankets, her face finally peaceful after years of relentless misery.
Outside, on the manicured perimeter lawns, the night was dangerously quiet. The crickets had stopped chirping.
Suddenly, five figures clad in tactical black gear materialized from the tree line like phantoms. Each man carried suppressed submachine guns and ceramic blades, their faces obscured by ballistic masks. They were the apex mercenaries of the Shadow Network—assassins who charged millions to erase entire bloodlines without leaving a trace.
“Target is on the second floor, east wing,” the strike leader whispered through his throat mic. “Capture the girl if possible. Terminate the male target on sight. Move.”
They sprinted across the dew-soaked grass with absolute silence, bypassing the outer laser sensors with military-grade electromagnetic jammers. In less than twenty seconds, they reached the French patio doors leading into the main salon.
The leader raised two fingers, signaling his breacher to place a thermal charge on the lock.
Click.
Before the charge could touch the glass, the outdoor floodlights blazed to life, turning the courtyard into a blinding arena of pure white daylight.
The five assassins froze, their night-vision goggles overloaded by the sudden blinding glare.
Standing in the center of the patio, sitting relaxed in a wrought-iron garden chair with a glass of scotch in his hand, was Damon. Raymond stood silently behind him, arms folded behind his back like an unyielding monolith.
“You’re late,” Damon said smoothly, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “I expected Aunt Evelyn’s dogs forty minutes ago.”
The mercenary leader didn't waste a second on words. “Fire!” he roared, raising his weapon.
Before any assassin could pull a trigger, the surrounding shrubbery exploded with movement. Twenty heavily armored operators bearing the gold lion insignia of the Sovereign Consortium stepped into the open, their heavy-caliber rifles already trained on the five intruders.
The red dot of a sniper laser centered directly between the strike leader’s eyes.
“Drop your weapons,” Raymond commanded, his voice vibrating with thunderous authority. “Or your remains will be shoveled into plastic bags.”
The mercenaries hesitated for half a second. They were hardened killers, but they were not fools. They realized with horrifying certainty that they had walked straight into a kill zone designed by someone who understood warfare far better than they ever would.
One by one, their high-tech weapons clattered onto the wet flagstones.
Damon took a measured sip of his scotch, his eyes never leaving the leader. “Who contracted you tonight?”
The leader spat on the ground through his mask. “We have an oath of silence. Kill us. You’ll get nothing.”
Damon set his glass down on the iron table with a delicate clink. He stood up, slowly buttoning his suit jacket.
“I don’t need your confession to know Evelyn paid you,” Damon said calmly, walking toward the kneeling mercenaries. “I just needed your encrypted comms unit.”
Raymond stepped forward, violently ripping the tactical communications tablet from the leader’s chest harness. The screen was still glowing with an active, unencrypted satellite link to the capital.
Damon picked up the radio transmitter, pressing the call button.

Across the state, inside her secure study, Evelyn Vance’s voice crackled through the speaker: “Is the girl dead? Did you eliminate Damon?”
Damon smiled into the microphone. “Good morning, Aunt Evelyn. Your delivery failed.”
