SILENT POISON, BROKEN VOWS / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Spilled Secret

The amber bottle rolled across the white marble floor, coming to a halt against Marcus’s polished dress shoes. Yellow capsules scattered like shattered glass across the gleam of the master bedroom. Marcus stood frozen between the bedside where his wife, Nia, lay motionless, and the doorway where Vanessa stood trembling. The air grew thick, suffocating and cold.

""Dada... I saw her put something in Mama’s milk,"" Maya repeated, her three-year-old voice fragile yet razor-sharp. Her tiny fingers, damp with tears, clutched Nia’s limp hand.

Vanessa took half a step backward into the hallway, her high heels clicking unevenly against the floor. ""Marcus, no... she’s a child! She doesn’t know what she’s saying. I dropped my vitamins, that's all!"" Her voice climbed an octave, laced with frantic desperation. She reached down to snatch the bottle, but Marcus moved faster.

Marcus crouched, his large hand clamping over the orange prescription vial. He read the label under the dim bedside lamp: Phenobarbital. A potent sedative. Nia had never been prescribed sedatives; her health had always been robust until three weeks ago, right around the time Vanessa—Marcus’s sister-in-law and business accountant—had moved into their guest wing following a bitter divorce.

""Call 911 right now,"" Marcus growled, not looking up from the bottle. His voice trembled with a terrifying restraint.

""Marcus, please, let me explain—""

""CALL THEM!"" he roared, whirling around. His chest heaved. Behind him, Nia’s breathing turned shallow and raspy, a faint rattle echoing in her throat. Marcus dropped to his knees beside his wife, pressing his fingers against her clammy carotid pulse. It was faint, erratic, slipping away second by second.

Vanessa fumbled with her smartphone with shaking fingers, but instead of dialing emergency services, she backed toward the top of the stairwell. Marcus lunged forward, grabbing the master bedroom landline receiver and punching three digits. ""Operator, my wife is unresponsive! She’s been poisoned. Send an ambulance to 442 Crestview Lane immediately!""

As he barked details into the phone, Maya tugged at his pant leg. ""Dada... Mama’s cold.""

Marcus scooped Maya into one arm while holding Nia’s limp hand with the other. ""Stay with me, Nia. Breathe, baby. Look at me."" Nia’s dark eyes fluttered open for a split second, dull and unfocused, before rolling back beneath fluttering lids. Her fingers gave one weak, involuntary twitch, and then went entirely limp.

At that exact moment, down in the foyer, the heavy oak front door slammed shut. Vanessa had fled.

Marcus raced to the arched bedroom window overlooking the driveway, clutching Maya tight against his chest. Through the rain-slicked glass, he watched Vanessa frantically pull out of the driveway in her silver sedan. But as the car's headlights swept across the wet asphalt, Marcus caught sight of a silhouette sitting calmly in the passenger seat—a man whose face he knew all too well.
