Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The phone line went dead with a click that sounded like a gunshot in Daniel's ear.
The elevator chimed, opening into the subterranean parking garage. Daniel stood frozen, his pulse roaring in his temples. Twenty million. A kidnapping. But how? Amy had vanished into a secure private network; only three people in the entire world knew where she had gone.
Daniel called Marcus Vance’s direct line. It rang four times before going straight to an automated message. He called his mother.
"Daniel?" Eleanor answered instantly, her voice strained. "Did you finish the meeting?"
"Mother, where is Marcus?" Daniel demanded, rushing toward his vehicle.
"Marcus? He left the estate two hours ago to deliver a care package to Amy's clinic. Why? What's happening?"
"Stay inside the house and lock the perimeter gates," Daniel ordered, starting the engine. "Don't open the door for anyone. Not even the police."
He threw the car into reverse, tires screeching against the painted concrete, and sped out into the blinding afternoon glare. As he drove toward the industrial district, his mind raced through the past seventy-two hours. The leak to the press. The timing of the board meeting. Evelyn’s obsession with forcing him out of the company assets.
Twenty million in corporate bonds was precisely the liquidity reserve Evelyn had requested authorization to transfer two days ago under the guise of an emergency market stabilization fund.
Daniel pulled his car into an alley two blocks away from the rusted warehouses of the 4th Street rail yard. The area was a desolate wasteland of overgrown tracks, decaying boxcars, and shattered glass. Rain began to fall again, drumming violently against the windshield.
He stepped out into the mud, his heart hammering against his ribs. He had no weapon, no backup, and no ransom. He had only the clothes on his back and the terrible realization of what his arrogance had cost everyone he loved.
He slipped through a broken chain-link fence, navigating the maze of rusted steel containers. Ahead, inside an open freight hangar, a single yellow work light illuminated the cavernous darkness.
Daniel approached the open sliding door, keeping his footsteps silent against the gravel.
Inside the hangar, parked beneath the flickering work light, sat Marcus Vance’s black security SUV. On the ground beside the driver’s door lay Marcus himself, zip-tied, his head bleeding from a heavy blunt strike.
Sitting on an overturned crate ten feet away was not a masked mercenary, but a man Daniel recognized immediately: Thomas Vance, Marcus’s estranged younger brother and a former security contractor dismissed from Sterling Enterprises three years prior for embezzlement.
And standing in the shadows behind him, holding an infant incubator wrapped in a thermal blanket, was Amy.
She was bound at the wrists to an iron support pillar, her face bruised, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fierce, maternal rage. When she saw Daniel step into the light, she didn't look relieved.
"Daniel, don't!" she screamed, her voice hoarse and raw. "It's a trap! He's not alone!"
Before Daniel could take another step, a sharp metallic click sounded directly behind his right ear.

"You're late, Mr. Sterling," a familiar woman's voice purred from the darkness behind him.
Daniel slowly turned his head to see Evelyn holding a suppressed automatic pistol, her golden hair shielded by a dark rain parka.
