Chapter 14 - Ashes of the Covenant

The violet fire did not burn like ordinary flame. It consumed the ancient willow with a ferocious, unnatural hunger, shrieking like a thousand dying voices as it tore through the wood. The roots wrapping around Leo’s shins instantly recoiled, withering into brittle, blackened husks that turned to ash under his touch.
Leo scrambled backward up the muddy slope of the trench, digging his boots into the slick limestone to escape the spreading heat. The air shimmered with waves of intense violet light, turning the dark waters of the pool into a boiling, frothing cauldron of steam and sulfur.
At the center of the inferno, Harlan Cross shrieked.
The roots that had bound him to the tree did not release him. They tightened, dragging him inward into the flaming hollow of the trunk as the willow collapsed in upon itself. His clothes caught fire instantly, burning not with normal flame, but with the searing purple heat that ate away at flesh and bone alike.
"No! No!" Harlan wailed, his skin blistering, his hair turning to ash in seconds. "The pact! You are destroying the valley! You are destroying everything!"
"The pact is broken!" a voice boomed across the chasm.
Leo turned toward the top of the trench.
Silhouetted against the dark sky stood Julian Vance.
The dead man was barely recognizable. His flannel shirt was burned away, revealing a torso scarred by fire and eighty years of burial, but he stood tall, powerful, and unyielding. In his right hand, he carried a heavy iron sledgehammer he had taken from the tool shed near the road.
Julian leapt down the rocky ledges of the trench, hitting the ground with thunderous thuds, descending like an avenging titan. He ignored the scorching heat of the violet flames, striding directly through the boiling water of the pool.
Harlan, pinned within the burning trunk of the tree, looked up through blackened, melting eyelids at the approaching corpse. Terror, pure and absolute, froze the dying man's face.
"Julian... please..." Harlan whimpered, his voice barely a rattle over the roaring fire. "We were brothers... we took the oath together..."
Julian reached the base of the burning tree. He did not speak. He did not waste words on the man who had stolen his life, his wife, and his son's childhood.
Julian raised the heavy iron sledgehammer high above his head. With a single, devastating blow backed by the full weight of his unnatural fury, he brought the hammer down onto the exposed, burning taproot of the willow.
The impact sounded like a lightning strike hitting a stone pillar.
A shockwave of air and violet sparks rippled outward across the chasm. The ancient tree split down the center, collapsing entirely into the boiling pool. Harlan Cross vanished beneath the fiery debris, his final scream swallowed by the roar of the collapsing earth.
A deep, subterranean groan echoed from miles beneath the valley. The black water in the pool began to drain rapidly into a massive fissure opening in the bedrock, swallowing the skeletons, the burning wood, and the ashes of three centuries of blood tithes.
The fire slowly died down, leaving behind only smoldering embers and thick, gray smoke that drifted up toward the clearing sky.
Leo stood at the edge of the chasm, his chest heaving, his small body covered in soot and mud.
In the center of the draining, empty pit, Julian Vance stood alone.

The fire was gone. The supernatural red embers of the brand on Julian's neck had faded completely, leaving behind smooth, unblemished skin. The milky, cataract film over his eyes was dissolving, revealing the warm, clear hazel beneath—the exact color of Leo’s own.
Julian slowly turned toward the slope, looking up at his son. For the first time, he was not a monster clawing from the earth. He was just a father, weary and free.
