Chapter 15 - The Chair at the Table

""Back to the sub! Move!"" David roared, shielding his wife and daughter with his body as the torrent slammed into the corridor.
Fighting the immense surge, David dragged them backward into the access tube. Sarah pushed Lily through the Osprey’s hatch into Elias's waiting arms. David grabbed the inner hatch rim just as the habitat’s main corridor imploded completely, tearing the steel platform away.
Sarah pulled David's arm with every ounce of strength she possessed, hauling him inside seconds before Elias slammed the titanium hatch shut and engaged the explosive decoupling bolts.
The Osprey was hurled upward by the concussive shockwave of the habitat's implosion, tumbling through the darkness before its emergency ballast tanks blew. The sub shot toward the ocean surface like a cork, breaking through the gray dawn swell into the open sea air.
Three weeks later.
The morning sun poured through the kitchen window of the farmhouse, bathing the wooden floorboards in amber warmth. Birds chirped in the garden outside, free of sirens, gunshots, or the suffocating silence of the abyss. The legal battle had ended swiftly; the encrypted data David carried had exposed the company's corruption to federal prosecutors, bringing safety, justice, and peace back to the valley.
Lily wobbled into the kitchen in her favorite yellow dress, a wooden spoon clutched in her hand.
She stopped at the dining table.
The navy trucker cap was no longer resting alone on the oak chair. Instead, a tall man with a neatly trimmed beard, wearing a clean flannel shirt, was sitting right there, blowing gently on a hot bowl of oatmeal.
David looked down at his daughter, his eyes shining with tears of joy, and opened his arms wide.

Sarah leaned against the counter, smiling through quiet tears as the empty chair was finally filled."
