THE GHOST ON THE RUNWAY / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - Scorched Asphalt

The radar pin flashed violently across the small screen, a jagged vector slicing through the map grid toward Runway 4. Clara didn’t have time to process whether the signal meant David was alive or someone was driving his corpse toward them. Marcus took a decisive step forward, reaching inside his jacket lapel.

"Clara, get in the car," Marcus barked, his tone shifting instantly from detached professional to frantic urgency. "Miller isn't state patrol. He was decommissioned six months ago!"

Officer Miller’s hand cleared his holster with practiced speed. The crack of gunfire shattered the tarmac serenity, a high-velocity round punching through the rear passenger window of the SUV, showering Toby in tempered safety glass. Toby screamed, dropping flat onto the floorboards between the bucket seats.

Marcus didn't run. He lunged straight at Miller, tackling the uniformed man around the ribs just as a second shot went wild into the sky. Both men crashed onto the concrete, rolling toward the luggage cart.

"Toby, lock the door!" Clara screamed, diving into the front passenger seat. She didn't wait for Marcus. Survival instincts took over, pure adrenaline overriding thought. She reached across the console, grabbed the key fob from the cup holder, and slammed her thumb against the start button. The heavy V8 engine roared to life with a deep, visceral rumble.

Through the rearview mirror, she saw Miller smash the butt of his weapon into Marcus’s temple. Blood sprayed across the pale gray pavement. Marcus slumped, motionless. Miller rose, eyes wild, bringing the pistol up to aim directly through the SUV’s windshield.

Clara threw the gear shift into reverse. She hammered the accelerator. The rear tires shrieked, smoking against the asphalt as the heavy vehicle surged backward. Miller dove to the left, narrowly missing the front bumper, firing two more rounds through the radiator grille. Steam hissed immediately from beneath the hood.

"Mom! He's coming around the side!" Toby cried from the back floor, hands clasped over his ears.

Clara spun the wheel hard, slamming the transmission into drive. The car leaped forward, rattling violently from the damaged radiator, veering away from the terminal gates and directly onto the wide expanse of the active service taxiway. In the distance, the corporate jet was already lifting its nose gear off the ground, roaring into the gray overcast sky—taking whatever secrets had been staged for them into the clouds.

She looked down at the console screen. The incoming signal was less than four hundred yards away, coming straight through the perimeter security fence at the southern end of the runway.

Before Clara could steer toward the perimeter road, a heavy black utility truck burst through the chain-link barrier with a deafening screech of tearing metal. The truck slid sideways, tires smoking, blocking her path entirely. The driver's door swung open, and a man stepped out into the smoke and gravel.

It was David. But the expression carved into his face was not relief—it was horror.
