Chapter 1 - The Line Across the Threshold

The front door stood wide open, framing the gray afternoon sky like a wound that refused to close. A sharp chill swept across the polished oak floors of the foyer, rustling the hem of Susan’s tailored trousers and biting against Chloe’s bare neck. Chloe stood frozen on the threshold, her fingers digging so violently into the leather strap of her mother’s tan handbag that her knuckles turned stark white. Her breath came in ragged, shallow hitches, burning the back of her throat.

Just seconds earlier, Susan’s polished nails had bitten into Chloe’s upper arm, shoving her toward the cold outdoors with a venom that had turned the familiar entryway into an executioner's dock. ""Now this is my house. Out,"" Susan had hissed, her dark eyes flashing with unmasked hatred. But now, Susan stood paralyzed beside the entrance, her hand hovering in midair like an actor caught out of character when the curtain rose too soon.

At the base of the grand staircase, Arthur Vance did not blink. He was still in his charcoal navy suit, his tie loosened just slightly at the throat from a day of corporate negotiations, but the warmth he usually carried had vanished entirely from his face. His jaw was clenched so hard the tendons in his neck strained against his collar. The silence between the three of them was deafening, thick with the sudden stench of betrayal.

""Were you throwing her out?"" Arthur’s voice was dangerously quiet, vibrating with a low frequency that made the high foyer ceiling feel oppressive. ""Tell me exactly what happened the second my car pulled into that driveway.""

Susan adjusted the cuffs of her emerald silk blouse, forcing a fragile, practiced smile onto her face. The frantic hostility melted into an expression of wounded innocence with terrifying speed. ""Arthur, darling, please. You’re misunderstanding everything. She was having an episode. She was screaming, throwing things in the kitchen... she said she couldn't stand being under the same roof as me. I was simply trying to escort her outside so she could calm down and breathe.""

""That's a lie!"" Chloe cried out, her voice cracking as tears spilled over her lashes. She stepped back into the house, her boots striking the wood like small hammers. ""Dad, she went into Mom’s old sewing room! She had black trash bags, Dad. She was packing up Mom’s things—her journals, her sketches, everything! When I begged her to stop, she grabbed my arm and dragged me down the stairs!""

Arthur shifted his gaze from Susan to Chloe, his eyes tracing the red, jagged marks blooming along the girl’s pale forearm. His expression darkened into something terrifyingly cold. Susan took a subtle half-step back, her eyes flickering toward the open door behind Chloe.

""Susan,"" Arthur said, taking two slow, deliberate steps forward until he stood directly between them. ""Give me the keys.""

Susan blinked, the counterfeit softness evaporating from her eyes. ""Excuse me?""

May you like

""You heard me,"" Arthur whispered, extending an open palm. ""Give me the master key to this house. Right now.""

Susan’s lips pressed into a thin, bloodless line. She did not reach into her pocket. Instead, she lifted her chin, a subtle sneer breaking through her composed veneer. ""You really want to play this game, Arthur? In front of her? Because if you take one more step, I will tell her the truth about what happened the night her mother died.""
