Chapter 14 - Letters Across the MilesAdolescence blossomed into young adulthood. Nora received an acceptance letter to study developmental psychology at a university three states away.

The day they packed the car was filled with familiar packing tape rituals, cardboard boxes, and bittersweet humor. When they arrived at Nora’s dormitory room, Elena helped her arrange her desk, hang photographs, and unpack textbooks.

On the nightstand, beside a stack of modern psychology manuals, Nora placed Barnaby, his fabric faded and his ears worn thin by years of loving embraces. Beside him sat the small cedar whistle.

As twilight gathered over the bustling campus, the moment of departure finally arrived. They stood in the dormitory doorway, echoes of their very first hallway moment hanging unspoken between them.

Elena took Nora’s hands. “Call me whenever you need to. Even if it's two in the morning.”

Nora smiled, her hazel eyes glistening with tears that did not fall. “I know, Mom. But you gave me everything I need to walk through this door.”

Elena kissed her daughter’s cheek, walked down the long corridor, and stepped out into the evening air. Her heart ached, but beneath the ache was a profound, unshakable peace. The love they had cultivated was boundless; distance could not fray a thread spun from grace.
