Chapter 4 - The Torn Edge

The photograph slid across the smooth fabric and came to a stop against the base of the white cake stand.
Elena looked down at it. It was a faded Polaroid, its chemical borders yellowed by decades of neglect. In the frame stood two young men standing beside a vintage motorcycle parked in front of an empty desert horizon. Both wore cut-off sleeves and silver chains. One was undeniably the stranger standing in their doorway, twenty years younger, laughing with reckless fury.
The other young man in the photo had the exact same jawline, the exact same clear hazel eyes as the man holding Maya right now.
""David,"" Elena breathed, her voice trembling as she looked up from the print to her husband. ""Who is this?""
Maya leaned forward from the carrier, her tiny, inquisitive fingers reaching down toward the glossy paper on the table. She didn't know danger; she only saw the shape, the reflection of light bouncing off the glossy surface.
""Get him out of here, Elena,"" David said, his voice dropping an octave, strained and hard. ""Take Maya and go upstairs.""
""She stays,"" the stranger said, stepping closer. The smell of cheap tobacco and road dust washed over the sweet scent of vanilla frosting. ""You didn't just walk away, little brother. You walked away with the ledger. And they gave me forty-eight hours to bring it back, or they put a match to every house with your name on the deed.""
David stood frozen. ""There is no ledger anymore, Marcus. I burned it the night she was born.""

Marcus’s eyes flickered to Maya. The baby, oblivious to the word 'ledger' or the venom behind it, held out her small open palm toward Marcus, mimicking the greeting she had learned to give neighbors.
Marcus stared at that tiny hand, his scarred fingers curling into a fist at his side. ""Then you just signed her death warrant.""
