Chapter 3 - Locked Out

The front door clicked shut with a heavy, final thud that vibrated through Mark’s skull. Outside, the midday heat hit him like an oven. On the asphalt driveway, a hydraulic tow truck was actively hoisting his vintage silver Porsche onto its bed, the metallic whine of the winch grinding through the quiet neighborhood.
""Hey! Put that down!"" Mark sprinted down the lawn, his boat shoes slipping on the freshly watered grass. ""That car is registered in my name! Stop touching my property!""
The tow operator, chewing gum beneath a sun-bleached ballcap, didn't even turn his head. He merely tapped a clipboard clipped to the passenger mirror of the rig. ""Repossession order signed off by the lienholder, pal. Vehicle was bought with business credit collateralized by Harrison & Vance Holdings. Guess what? Your business partner filed for emergency restructuring this morning.""
Mark's blood ran cold. Harrison & Vance Holdings. Clara’s maiden name was Vance. Her late father had provided seventy percent of the initial seed capital for the architectural firm Mark had built his reputation upon. Mark had always assumed the family trust shares were dormant, merely passive equity handled by estate attorneys. He had convinced himself that his brilliance was the engine; the capital was just background paperwork.
Frantic, he grabbed his phone and dialed Arthur Vance—Clara’s older brother and the firm's chief financial trustee. The line didn't ring twice before Arthur answered. His voice held none of the usual cordiality he offered at family dinners.
""Don't speak, Mark. Just listen,"" Arthur cut in before Mark could launch his defense. ""Every corporate card under your name has been suspended. The board has invoked Section 14 of the partnership charter: moral turpitude and breach of fiduciary trust.""
""Fiduciary trust?"" Mark shouted, pacing the sidewalk as neighbors began peeking through their shuttered blinds. ""This is a domestic issue, Arthur! Clara is emotional because of the pregnancy! I was closing a eight-figure resort contract in California to secure our family's future!""
""You were at the resort hotel bar at three in the morning buying champagne for an interior decorator while your wife was calling 911 from the hallway floor,"" Arthur replied with chilling detachment. ""The dashboard camera on your Uber recorded Clara on the ground by the open doorway as you drove away. The driver uploaded the footage to dispatch when he heard the ambulance sirens two minutes after you turned the corner.""
Mark felt the ground beneath him turn to water. The driver. He remembered the young rideshare driver hesitating, glancing nervously in the rearview mirror, asking if the lady in the doorway needed help. Mark had snapped at him to step on the gas or lose his tip.
""Where is she, Arthur?"" Mark begged, the arrogance peeling away from his voice. ""Where is my son?""

""His name is Julian,"" Arthur said quietly. ""And you will only see him when a judge decides whether you are safe enough to be in the same room. Check your email. Your severance paperwork has already been processed.""
The call went dead. At that moment, a sleek black sedan pulled up across the street, its tinted window rolling down just enough for Mark to glimpse an unfamiliar woman holding a long telephoto lens aimed directly at his face.
