Chapter 9 - The Lion's Den

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting the industrial valley in bruised shades of purple and burnt orange. The heat didn't dissipate; it lingered, trapped between the concrete and the smog, heavy as a wool shroud.
Jonas drove the truck within three blocks of the mini-mart, parking in the shadow of a condemned residential tower. He wore a clean collared shirt over his armor vest, disguised as a municipal bounty runner, while Maya sat beside him, her hands secured in loose plastic zip-ties that she could slip out of in half a second.
""Remember,"" Jonas whispered as they walked down the cracked sidewalk toward the illuminated storefront. ""Derrick thinks he’s won. He thinks you're returning to clear your record because you have nowhere else to run. When he opens the register to process the administrative settlement, you place your right thumb on the optical pad. That drops the security firewall for fifty seconds. I do the rest.""
""What if he doesn't want the fine?"" Maya whispered, her heart hammering like a trapped bird against her ribs. ""What if he just wants to hurt me?""
""He wants the clout, Maya,"" Jonas replied grimly. ""A live reconciliation stream generates three times the engagement of an arrest. His greed is our only cover.""
The storefront had already been cleared of glass; maintenance drones had installed temporary plexiglass panels over the shattered entry. Inside, Derrick was sitting behind the counter, an ice pack pressed against his bandaged thumb, a new ring light shining directly into his face. He was in the middle of a live broadcast, recounting his 'heroic survival' against an unprovoked assault.
The bell above the door chimed with a clean, electronic chime as Jonas pushed Maya inside.
Derrick froze, his eyes widening. He looked from Maya’s small, downcast form to Jonas’s imposing, stoic presence. A slow, triumphant grin spread across his face, revealing teeth that were too white, too perfect.
""Well, well,"" Derrick whispered, leaning into his microphone. ""Look who the desert dragged back in. The little water thief returns to pay her debts.""

""Found her hiding in the stormwater channels,"" Jonas said gruffly, shoving Maya gently toward the counter. ""Her guardian is incapacitated. She wants to clear the infraction before the district tribunal opens tomorrow. I’m claiming the finder’s fee.""
Derrick stood up slowly, picking up his streaming phone and aiming it squarely at Maya’s face. ""The audience has been waiting for this. Fifty thousand people are watching right now, kid. Kneel down, look at the lens, and apologize for what you did to this establishment.""
