Chapter 13 - An Unannounced Guest

Two days before Christmas, a soft knock sounded at Apartment 4B.

Nora opened the door to find Clara Vance standing in the hall, breathing heavily from the climb up the four flights. She held a small cardboard shoe box tied with blue baker’s twine.

“You shouldn’t have walked up those stairs, Miss Clara,” Nora scolded gently, immediately taking her arm and guiding her to the kitchen chair.

“Nonsense,” Clara panted, though her cheeks were bright with exertion. “My doctor told me my heart needs exercise. Climbing up to see you is more productive than walking around a sterile shopping mall.”

Nora poured her a cup of hot chamomile tea. Clara took it between both hands, letting the steam warm her face.

“Evelyn signed the relinquishment papers yesterday,” Clara said quietly, looking into the amber liquid. “The trust is officially dissolved. She’s moving into a small garden flat out in Greenbrier. Near our cousin.”

Nora felt a strange, quiet pang in her chest. “How is she?”

“Humiliated,” Clara answered honestly. “Broke, by her old standards. But for the first time in twenty years, she isn’t looking at people through the sights of a rifle. When you caught her in the courthouse hallway, Nora… she told me about it. She wept for two days. She kept saying that if you had pushed her down, she could have kept hating you. But your kindness made it impossible for her to remain who she was.”

Clara slid the shoe box across the table.

“What is this?” Nora asked.

“David’s ledger,” Clara said. “Evelyn found it in Harold’s personal safe behind the office desk. It contains eight years of maintenance logs David kept for all the neighborhood properties. He didn't just fix boilers, Nora. He kept track of every family’s needs. He noted down who was sick, who was out of work, who needed a little extra time. He was building this community long before you signed those forms.”
