Chapter 13 - The Iron Pact

The cold soil beneath the floorboards bit into Sarah’s knees and elbows as she leaned her entire weight down into the crawlspace. The green luminescence cast long, grotesque shadows across the joists above her. As her face neared the chained chest, a sudden, piercing chill wrapped around her forearms—not the cold of winter air, but the unnatural, draining chill of a spectral void.

The tiny, skeletal hands reaching from the velvet interior suddenly twitched, their desiccated fingers brushing against Sarah’s knuckles. A telepathic wave of unbearable grief crashed into Sarah’s consciousness: the terror of a sick infant abandoned in the dark forty years ago, suffocating beneath dirt while his mother sang lullabies in the brightly lit kitchen above.

""I know,"" Sarah sobbed aloud, tears dripping down her face into the ancient dirt. ""I know what she did to you, Thomas. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.""

The skeletal fingers paused, hovering inches from her face.

Behind her, the nursery door groaned under an immense, violent impact. The maple wood cracked down the center, the barricade of the broken crib sliding several inches across the carpet. Evelyn’s gray, putrefying face appeared through the split in the wood, her milky eyes rolling with savage fury.

The pact cannot be undone! the corpse shrieked through the splintered door. The house takes a son! Hammer the iron and you trade your own life for theirs!

Sarah didn't hesitate. She looked at Thomas’s tiny, chained coffin. She didn't want to destroy the forgotten child; she wanted to give him the peace he had been denied for four decades.

""You don't belong to the ground, Thomas,"" Sarah whispered, her voice steady and filled with absolute love. ""And you don't belong to her anymore.""

Sarah took the heavy iron nail, aligned it over the ancient lock plate of the wooden chest, and grabbed a loose brick from the chimney foundation beside the joist. With a cry that tore from the deepest core of her maternal soul, she brought the brick down upon the iron nail.

CLANG.

A shockwave of blinding white light detonated outward from the nail head, shattering the green luminescence instantly. The house shuddered violently on its foundation, the floorboards rippling like water.

Outside the door, the shrieking stopped abruptly, replaced by the sound of something heavy and brittle collapsing into a shower of dry dust.
