Tommy’s whistle shattered the paralysis.
The balcony erupted into wild, unrestrained cheering. Within three seconds, the thunderous roar cascaded down into the mezzanine and slammed into the orchestra stalls. Seasoned critics who had not smiled in twenty years stood to their feet, their programs discarded as they applauded with frantic, desperate energy.
The applause was not the polite patter of society patrons; it was a visceral, emotional wave that shook the chandeliers. Women in diamond chokers wept openly; men who had spent their lives trading stocks clutched their chests, moved by a profound beauty they could neither purchase nor manufacture.
On the stage, Clara stood up from the pine stool. She did not curtsy like a trained prodigy. She looked up at the high balcony, found Tommy waving his woolen cap, and raised her hand in a simple, heartfelt wave.
Marcus Vance-Pemberton slipped out of his box into the shadows of the corridor, his face gray with defeat. The game was over. No amount of endowment money or institutional influence could erase the truth the audience had just witnessed.
In the wings, the stage manager pushed Julian forward. "Go on, Maestro. Sponsoring patron takes the stage."
Julian hesitated, then shook his head. He reached out, took Eleanor by the hand, and gently led her through the curtain instead.
