Chapter 1 - The Whisper in the Marble Hall

The sterile scent of antiseptic clashed violently with the cold aroma of polished marble and expensive cologne. Nikolai Volkov knelt on the kitchen floor, his tailored trousers resting against the icy stone. His hand, marked with black ink that curved along his knuckles, hovered just above his daughter’s small knee. Six-year-old Mia sat perched on the pristine counter, looking frail beneath the colossal glow of the crystal chandelier overhead. Clara, her hands trembling inside latex gloves, smoothed the final layer of white gauze over the angry red scrape.
""Daddy... it was one of them,"" Mia’s small voice dropped like a lead weight into the silence.
The room froze. Behind Nikolai, the heavy footsteps of his inner guard ceased entirely. Viktor, his second-in-command, stood rigid near the entrance archway, flanked by two towering enforcers whose hands instinctively settled closer to the holsters beneath their dark blazers. The quiet in the mansion became deafening, thick with unspoken terror. Nikolai did not look back at his men, nor did he allow his breathing to hitch. In the cutthroat hierarchy of the city's syndicates, showing fear was an invitation for assassination.
""Who, sweetheart?"" Nikolai asked, his tone deceptively soft, a razor blade concealed in silk velvet. ""Look at me, Mia. Who touched you?""
Mia’s hazel eyes flickered toward the doorway, past the arched threshold where shadows stretched down the grand hallway. ""He wore a silver pin on his lapel. Like yours, but broken. He was waiting near the glass pavilion when the guards swapped shifts. He said if I cried out, he'd take you away next.""
A chill slithered down Nikolai’s spine. The silver pin was not a badge of enemies; it was the crest of the inner circle—an emblem reserved only for the seven lieutenants sworn by oath to protect the Volkov line. An outsider couldn't have slipped into the perimeter without triggering the automated tripwires or silencing the surveillance feeds. This had been executed from within the bloodline itself.
Nikolai slowly stood, towering over the counter. When he turned around, his features were carved out of sheer obsidian. His gaze swept over the three men stationed at the entry. Viktor met his stare without flinching, though the muscle along his jaw ticked imperceptibly.
""Lock the gates,"" Nikolai commanded, his voice devoid of emotion. ""Cut all outward telecommunications. Bring the head of security to my study, and gather the council before midnight.""
""Boss,"" Viktor began, stepping forward cautiously, ""the perimeter guards reported no breach on the northern cameras. If there's an infiltrator, sweeping the grounds will take hours—""

""I did not ask for a sweep,"" Nikolai interrupted, his dark eyes fixing upon Viktor’s coat.
Just beneath Viktor’s folded silk handkerchief, the lapel pin was conspicuously absent.
