Chapter 3 - The Descent

The word Grandpa struck the room with the force of a detonating charge. Elena stumbled back against the hallway banister, her knees buckling. Mark whipped around, staring at his daughter as if she were a total stranger.

"Lily, what did you just call him?" Elena choked out, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "Your grandfather died in a nursing home in Denver five years ago. You know that. Why would you say that?"

Lily blinked slowly, her face innocent, almost sleepy. "Because that’s his voice. The voice from the box under my crib."

Mark felt the room tilt. When they had cleaned out the attic of their previous rental home before moving here, Lily had carried a small, lacquered wooden music box everywhere. Inside it was a brass cylinder that had never played a tune, only clicked when wound. He had assumed it was broken junk from an estate sale.

He turned back to the half-open vault door. The gap was wide enough now to see past the threshold. Beyond lay a steep, spiral staircase made of perforated industrial steel, coiling down into ink-black depths far deeper than any standard suburban basement had a right to go. The air drafting upward was chilled to nearly freezing, carrying with it a distinct hum of high-voltage electrical transformers.

"Elena, take Lily to the car," Mark said, his voice dropping into a flat, steady pitch born of pure adrenaline. "Lock the doors. Keep the engine running. If I am not down the front steps in three minutes, drive to the precinct on 4th Street."

"No!" Elena pleaded, lunging forward to grab his sleeve. "Do not go down there! Whatever is in this house, let the authorities deal with it! We don't owe this place our lives!"

"Look at the blueprints we got from the county clerk!" Mark barked, shaking his arm free. "There is no sub-basement on the municipal record. The power this thing is drawing... it’s tied to our meter. If someone has Lily’s name, if someone has been watching us, waiting for us to buy this exact parcel... I need to know why before they cut the power to our lives."

He reached into his pocket and clicked on the flashlight of his smartphone. The beam pierced the gloom, illuminating the first dozen steel steps. Fastened to the wall of the stairwell was a yellowing plastic placard with red stenciled letters:

Mark swallowed hard, stepped over the cracked drywall and twisted metal, and planted his boot on the first steel rung. Below him, forty feet down in the subterranean dark, a pair of bright fluorescent tubes flickered violently to life.
