Chapter 1 - The Weight of Whispered Names

The air inside the boardroom tasted of aged bourbon, gunpowder, and the impending end of someone’s life. Julian knelt on one knee before Elena, his thumb brushing beneath her lash line to catch a tear before it could drop onto the pale champagne silk of her dress. The fabric was torn at the collarbone, jagged threads fraying against bruised porcelain skin. Julian’s dark eyes, ordinarily calculating and void of human hesitation, flared with a quiet, lethal fury. Behind him, four lieutenants sat rigidly around the mahogany table, hands lingering inches from their concealed holsters, staring straight ahead. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed loudly when Julian was studying blood.
“Look at me, Elena,” he commanded, his voice dropping into a register that made the wood panels hum. “Give me a name. Don’t tell me what happened. Just tell me who I need to butcher.”
Elena shivered against the cold polished oak of the heavy door. Her chest rose and fell in ragged, suffocating gasps. The adrenaline that had carried her through the private elevator was turning into lead behind her ribs. She looked past his shoulder, toward the conference table where stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills flanked an open briefcase and a white linen napkin blotched with fresh crimson. The underworld of the city was trading empires tonight, yet here she was, the ghost he had buried three years ago, bleeding onto his bespoke Italian carpet.
“Julian, please,” she choked out, her fingers catching the lapel of his tailored jacket. The expensive wool bunched in her trembling fist. “You don’t understand. It’s not just one of them. The northern docks... they were waiting. They knew I was arriving on the midnight ferry. They knew about the safe house before the engine even cut out.”
Julian didn’t blink. His jaw tightened until the tattoos swirling up his neck shifted against the starched white collar of his shirt. He stood up slowly, towering over her, casting a broad shadow that swallowed the doorway. He reached down, took her ice-cold hand, and pulled her gently to her feet, shielding her from the predatory gazes of the men at the table.
“Mikhail,” Julian spoke without turning his head.
The bald man sitting to the left of the briefcase flinched slightly before rising to his feet. “Boss?”
“Clear the floor. Lock the freight elevators and put every sentinel on the perimeter on shoot-to-kill protocols. If a bird lands on the rooftop terrace without clearance, tear its wings off.” Julian’s hand moved down to the small of Elena’s back, guiding her forward into the private suite concealed behind the bookshelves.

Elena leaned into his warmth, terrified of the violence humming beneath his skin yet clinging to it like a life raft. Just as the hidden door swung inward, Julian paused, catching the scent of iron and gunpowder clinging to her damp hair. He tilted her face upward into the dim chandelier glow.
“Elena,” he murmured, his gaze narrowing into cold steel. “Where is the child?”
