Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

Sparks showered like golden rain through the seams of the bunker door. The smell of burning steel and cordite filled the corridor.

""Clara, into the escape duct behind the wardrobe,"" Edward ordered, chambering a round. ""It leads out to the beach cliff. There's a speedboat moored at the cove.""

""I'm not leaving you,"" Clara snapped, planting her feet on the concrete floor. ""You told me in the church that I wasn't alone. That applies to you, too.""

Edward stared at her in the dim red strobe light, a mixture of awe and fierce pride flashing across his face. ""If we die tonight, Mrs. Kane, we die fighting.""

""We aren't dying,"" she said.

With a thunderous crash, the steel blast door buckled and collapsed inward.

Four heavily armed mercenaries rushed the breach, firing suppressed automatic bursts. Sean returned fire immediately, dropping the first two before diving behind a concrete pillar. Edward moved with terrifying, lethal grace, leaning around the doorway and firing three precise shots that neutralized the third attacker.

The fourth mercenary lunged straight at Edward, tackling his injured torso to the floor. Edward gasped as the surgical sutures tore, his gun sliding across the smooth concrete.

The mercenary pinned Edward's throat, raising a combat knife. ""Regards from Mr. Blackwood,"" the man hissed.

A deafening BANG echoed through the room.

The mercenary stiffened, a black hole appearing in his shoulder, and collapsed sideways.

Behind him stood Clara, both hands locked around the smoking Glock, her face pale, her jaw set like stone.

Edward looked up from the floor, clutching his bleeding ribs, a breathtaking smile spreading across his face. ""Good shot, wife.""

Before they could breathe, slow clapping echoed from the smoke-filled doorway.

Richard Kane stepped over the bodies, wearing a Kevlar vest, a submachine gun resting casually in his arms. Beside him stood an elderly man in an immaculate gray suit—Marcus Blackwood.

""Bravo, Clara,"" Richard laughed maniacally. ""A true street fighter. But this farce ends now.""
