Chapter 1 - The Waking Ghost

The rhythm of the cardiac monitor was a sterile, mechanical metronome counting down seconds in a room that smelled of antiseptic, fear, and unresolved bloodlines. Adrian felt consciousness tear into him not like light breaking dawn, but like jagged shrapnel dislodging from scar tissue. His nerve endings burned. His lungs felt compressed, as though thirty fathoms of salt water pressed down upon his ribs. Yet, beneath the heavy fog of surgical anesthesia and post-trauma sedation, one singular instinct ignited: the weight against his sternum.

Curled inside the hollow of his left arm, tucked safely beneath the coarse hospital blanket, was a warm, fragile bundle. Three-year-old Mia. Her dark curls clung damply to her temple, her chest rising and falling in shallow, rhythmic breaths of deep exhaustion. She didn't know about boardrooms, trust funds, or the syndicate debts that had nearly claimed both their lives on the mountain pass forty-eight hours ago. She only knew the steady thump of the scarred giant’s heartbeat.

When Elena reached across the bed rail—her fingers trembling, her crisp white silk shirt creased from two days without sleep—Adrian’s tattooed hand snapped forward. His knuckles, ink-blackened with old street sigils and violent history, clamped down around her wrist.

"Don't take her," he rasped. The sound was torn from the basement of his chest, rough like crushed gravel.

Elena did not flinch from the iron grip, though her golden skin flushed with tension. "Adrian... please. She didn't mean to disturb you. You’ve been under for two days. Dr. Chen needs to check your incision."

Adrian’s jaw locked. Across the room, framed in the sterile twilight of the doorway, stood Sterling. Tailored charcoal suit. Silk tie straight as a coroner’s knife. Cold, calculating eyes assessing the wounded bear in the bed. Sterling represented the Vanderlyn estate—the family that considered Mia nothing more than an inconvenient line of inheritance, a legal lever to pry control away from Adrian’s fallen brother.

"She stays right here," Adrian whispered, his glare locking onto Sterling like a laser-guided optic. His tattooed palm flattened possessively over the toddler’s back, shielding her tiny frame from the room. "Nobody touches her."

Sterling adjusted his cufflinks with clinical calm. "You barely survived the surgery, Adrian. Custody hearings begin in seventy-two hours. A convicted felon recovering from gunshot wounds does not make a suitable guardian in the eyes of the surrogate court."

"Then you better bring an army to this room, Sterling," Adrian growled softly, feeling the tearing stitch in his side. "Because until my pulse hits zero, she doesn't leave my chest."
