Chapter 10 - Infiltration

They climbed back through the drainage conduits, moving like shadows against the current. The heavy rain had begun to seep through the ventilation grates, masking the sound of their boots against the iron rungs.

By the time they reached the ground level through the private conservatory at the west wing, the mansion had been transformed into a forward operating base. Tactical floodlights illuminated the glass domes of the greenhouse, casting jagged geometric shadows across the exotic palms and marble statues.

Dante peered through the foliage. Mercenaries in Julian’s colors were patrolling the perimeter corridors, barking coordinates into their headpieces.

""They've cordoned off the grand foyer,"" Evelyn whispered, crouching beside a stone fountain. ""Julian is holding court in the dining hall. He's already calling the syndicate lieutenants, claiming you went mad, killed the dog, and fled with Clara.""

""He needs them to ratify his leadership before dawn,"" Dante observed grimly. ""If the lieutenants arrive and find me dead, Julian assumes total control of the bloodline assets.""

""What about Clara?""

""She stays hidden here in the root cellar beneath the greenhouse,"" Dante said, gently untying the sling and placing the sleeping child into a dry, reinforced alcove behind the ancient terracotta pots. Clara’s breathing was deep and rhythmic now, the counter-agent doing its work. Dante gently smoothed a strand of blonde hair from her forehead.

""Fix him, Uncle Dante,"" her earlier words echoed in the silence of his skull.

He couldn't bring Atlas back from the dead. But he could build the hound a pyre out of the men who killed him.

Dante stood up, racking the slide of an assault rifle he had taken from the canal. ""Evelyn, watch this door. Kill anyone who enters who isn't me.""

""Dante,"" Evelyn called out softly, catching his sleeve. Her eyes were hard as diamonds. ""Leave Julian for last.""

Dante didn't answer. He slipped through the glass double doors into the grand corridor, vanishing into the smoke.
