Chapter 1 - The Verdict on Marble

The silence inside the grand rotunda of The Grand Aurelius was heavy, cold, and absolute. High above, crystal chandeliers refracted golden light across pristine Italian marble, casting long shadows against towering fluted columns. At the reception desk, the air seemed to have vanished.

Ethan’s hand hung frozen inches above his mechanical keyboard. His breath caught in his throat, heart hammering violently against his ribs. Five seconds earlier, he was an expendable front-desk clerk facing immediate termination. Now, the world had turned upside down.

Behind him, Robert’s face had drained of every drop of color. The arrogant, razor-sharp scowl that usually terrorized every junior employee in the hotel had disintegrated into a mask of pure terror. His mouth opened, closed, and opened again, yet no sound came out. The tailored Italian three-piece suit he wore so proudly suddenly looked like a hollow shroud draped over a trembling mannequin.

Between them stood the old man.

His dirt-streaked navy coat smelled faintly of industrial rain and exhaust fumes. His weathered hands, dry and lined with deep grooves of decades of unrelenting labor, rested casually on the handle of his battered leather suitcase. He slowly lowered the black smartphone from his ear, his piercing grey eyes drifting toward the breathless senior executive who had just sprinted across the lobby.

"M-Mr. Harrison..." Julian, the Senior Regional Vice President, choked on the syllables, bowing his head so low his tailored tie grazed his polished oxfords. "Sir... we had no idea you would arrive unannounced. Please forgive this catastrophic oversight. The penthouse suite has been prepared to your exact specifications since dawn."

Julian turned on Robert with feral fury. "You utter fool. Do you know who this man is? Arthur Harrison built the very foundation this empire stands upon. He owns every pillar, every brick, and every stock option you cling to!"

Robert swayed on his feet, his knees trembling. "M-Mr. Harrison... sir, I was only trying to protect the standard... the image of the establishment—"

"The image?" Arthur Harrison spoke. His voice was not loud, but it possessed a terrifying, resonant gravity that cut right to the bone. "A man who judges an empire by its polish will inevitably be buried under its rubble. Susan has already processed your termination, Robert. Your credentials, your company accounts, and your executive severance are void."

Arthur turned his gaze toward Ethan, whose eyes were wide with disbelief. The old billionaire studied the young man's badge, his gaze softening by a fraction.

"Integrity is rare in this city," Arthur murmured. "You treated an apparent beggar with dignity when you had nothing to gain and everything to lose. As of this moment, Ethan, you are the General Manager of The Grand Aurelius. Julian will walk you through the transition."

"Sir..." Ethan swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "I don't know what to say. I'm just a desk clerk."

"You were a desk clerk five minutes ago," Arthur replied evenly. "Now, you are the shield that guards my threshold. Do not disappoint me."

A flurry of high-heeled footsteps echoed down the grand corridor. A woman in an immaculate charcoal suit cut through the gathering crowd of whispered onlookers, flanked by two formidable private security operatives. It was Susan Vance, the iron-willed Chief Operating Officer of the Harrison Sovereign Trust.

Her expression was grave, devoid of the relief one might expect upon finding the missing patriarch safe. She bypassed the bowing executives entirely, stopping directly beside Arthur.

"Arthur," Susan said in a low, urgent murmur that sent a ripple of tension across the marble floor.

Arthur did not turn around. "Is it done, Susan?"

"Robert's expulsion is handled," she whispered, leaning closer, her jaw tightly clenched. "But that isn't why I came personally. The board didn't leak your arrival, Arthur. Someone tracked your private jet before it even left London. Look at your phone. Now."

Arthur slowly raised the sleek black device. On the encrypted screen flashed a single unread notification from a restricted terminal:

The old king plays at being a pauper. Enjoy your final night in the tower, Arthur. Tomorrow, the Sovereign falls.
