Chapter 1 - The Cold Shift

The sterile scent of antiseptic did little to mask the lingering coppery smell of blood seeping through Elena’s layered surgical dressings. Her breath came in shallow, fragile shudders, each movement of her chest accompanied by the steady, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor beside her bed. Viktor remained motionless, his head bowed, kissing her limp knuckles adorned by the dark shadows of his own tattooed fingers. Tears, hot and silent, carved tracks through the grime and gunpowder residue on his stubbled cheeks.
In the bed just behind them, his mother lay in a medically induced slumber, alive only because Elena had stepped directly into the path of five high-velocity rounds. When the gunfire erupted in the underground parking bay, Elena had not hesitated; she had thrown herself across the matriarch, absorbing the barrage intended to decapitate the Rostov dynasty in a single stroke. Viktor’s tears were not simply mourning; they were the agony of a ruthless syndicate kingpin who had never learned how to protect the only woman who dared look at his soul without flinching.
""Boss,"" Marcus’s low voice broke the quiet like a hammer hitting glass. The security chief took one deliberate step forward from the shadows near the steel double doors, flanked by two armed operatives whose postures remained rigid as stone.
Viktor did not look up immediately. He pressed his lips against Elena’s skin one more time, feeling the faint, fluttering pulse beneath her wrist. ""Speak,"" he muttered, his tone hollow, scraping against his throat like dry gravel.
""We pulled the server logs from the secondary security vault before the mainframe fried,"" Marcus said, keeping his eyes downcast out of deference to the dying girl. ""The garage blast gates weren't overridden remotely. The authorization key came from an interior terminal inside the penthouse.""
The silence that followed was suffocating. The tears on Viktor’s cheeks did not dry; rather, the muscles in his jaw hardened until a tendon twitched violently near his ear. His fingers slowly released Elena’s, lowering her frail arm back onto the white sheets.
""Inside the house?"" Viktor turned his head slowly, his bloodshot eyes locking onto Marcus with lethal clarity. The sorrow was suddenly extinguished, replaced by a terrifying, arctic stillness. ""There were only four people with access to the master terminal while I was at the docks.""

""Yes, Boss,"" Marcus answered quietly, extending a secured black tablet. ""And according to the biometric log, the thumbprint didn't belong to a guard.""
Viktor’s hand reached out to take the tablet, but before his fingers grazed the glass, the heart monitor beside Elena let out a long, unbroken, piercing screech.
