Chapter 12 - Smoke on the Water

As twilight fell, a heavy, suffocating silence descended upon Sector Four. The celebration had dispersed, the families returning to their homes under the watchful protection of Michael’s private security detail, which was now stationed on every rooftop. But the air felt charged, thick with the scent of stagnant river water and impending violence.
Maria refused to return to the luxury penthouse. ""If Hector built this stand to protect the neighborhood, I will not hide behind bulletproof glass while other people fight for it.""
Instead, she sat in the back office of an old dry-cleaning shop adjacent to her sidewalk plot, where Michael and Julian had established a command post. Multiple tactical monitors displayed live camera feeds of the intersections, the dark alleyways, and the adjacent canal.
""Vance knows we have the streets covered,"" Julian explained, highlighting the sewer and drainage networks on a digital blueprint. ""If he sends men with gasoline, they won't come by car. They’ll use the drainage canal behind the warehouses.""
At 1:15 AM, motion sensors on the north canal gate tripped.
On the third monitor, two figures dressed in dark diving wetsuits emerged from the murky water of the industrial canal. They carried heavy waterproof satchels strapped to their backs—military-grade industrial accelerants designed to burn at temperatures high enough to melt structural steel.
""They're targeting the support pilings beneath the street,"" Michael said, strapping on a heavy vest and picking up his radio. ""If those pilings collapse, the entire corner falls into the subway tunnel, and the land automatically reverts to emergency municipal condemned status.""
""Michael, wait,"" Martha pleaded, catching her oldest son's sleeve. ""Let the police handle it.""
""The police are forty minutes away, Mother, stationed outside the district by a coordinated series of fake bomb threats,"" Michael replied, gently kissing her forehead. ""Julian, stay with Maria and Mom. If they breach the perimeter, evacuate out the rear through the subway station.""
""You're not going down there alone,"" Julian snapped, grabbing his own jacket.
""I have five armed men at the watergate,"" Michael said firmly. ""I need you on the surface to control the valves. If they ignite that accelerant in the tunnel, the only way to save this block is to flood the main storm sluice from the control box on Maria's corner.""
May you like
Julian hesitated, then nodded sharply. ""God be with you, brother.""
Michael disappeared into the shadows of the rear alley, heading toward the water. Maria clutched Martha’s trembling hand, her eyes fixed on the flickering monitor as the two dark figures slipped silently into the drainage pipe beneath their feet.
