Chapter 4 - The Vault Beneath the Street

The idling sedan did not move, but its headlights flashed twice—a signal to someone unseen.
""Get your personal belongings, Maria,"" Michael commanded softly. ""Now.""
""I cannot leave the food,"" Maria argued, panic edging her stubbornness. ""The food is thirty pounds of chicken and ten pots of rice. If I leave it, everything spoils. This cart is all I have.""
""Mrs. Flores,"" Julian said, his eyes intensely earnest. ""You fed us when our own father abandoned us to freeze in a ditch. You gave us your livelihood night after night without ever asking for a single coin. This cart will be protected. But you cannot stay here tonight.""
Martha touched Maria’s shoulder, guiding her away from the cart toward the middle SUV. Two suited drivers immediately stepped out, scanning the rooftops and alleyways with watchful, practiced gazes. One of them, a broad-shouldered man with an earpiece, stepped behind the food cart, engaging a hidden wheel lock and throwing a heavy, weatherproof tarp over the stainless steel.
As Maria allowed herself to be guided into the leather interior of the luxury vehicle, she glanced back through the tinted window. The dark sedan at the corner suddenly accelerated, tires screeching as it surged into the intersection, clipping the back of the vendor cart with a violent, metallic crash.
The impact tore the canvas umbrella from its frame, sending aluminum pots clattering across the asphalt, spilling yellow rice and spiced beans into the gutters.
Maria gasped, lunging toward the door handle, but Martha held her tight. ""Look, Maria! Look!""
Instead of fleeing, Michael and Julian did not flinch. Two more black vehicles pulled out from the side street, pinning the attacking sedan against the concrete sidewalk before it could escape. Armed security guards exited the perimeter vehicles, surrounding the driver’s side door.

Julian walked calmly over to the wreckage of the cart. He picked up the battered metal ladle from the street, wiped the spilled sauce on his silk pocket square, and walked to Maria’s door. He opened it, handing the dented tool into her hands.
""They just committed assault and destruction of private property on federal easement land,"" Julian whispered. ""We wanted them to make the first move.""
