Chapter 6 - The Safehouse on the Bay

The vehicle didn't stop for two hours. Elena remained curled in the footwell, her muscles cramping, refusing to loosen her grip on the child until the continuous hum of high-speed asphalt finally gave way to the uneven crunch of gravel.

When the rear door clicked open, rain poured into the car, cold and smelling of pine needles and salt water. Matteo leaned in, his face gray with exhaustion. The cut above his eyebrow had reopened, a trickle of dried blood tracing the line of his cheekbone.

"Out," he said quietly.

Elena climbed out, trembling from sheer physical strain. They were deep in a coastal pine forest. Ahead of them stood an unremarkable single-story stone cottage half-hidden beneath overhanging fir trees. The gray waters of a stormy bay churned fifty yards below a rocky cliff.

Matteo’s two guards immediately took up positions along the perimeter, melting into the mist with long rifles resting against their raincoats.

Inside, the cottage was bare, furnished only with utilitarian cots, a laminate kitchen table, and banks of high-definition surveillance monitors glowing in the shadows. Matteo set Mia down on a sofa, gently wrapping her in a dry wool throw. The little girl had finally succumbed to exhaustion, her eyelids fluttering closed almost instantly.

Matteo turned to face Elena. The silence between them felt louder than the gunfire in the tunnel.

"You should have run," Matteo said, stripping off his blood-soaked jacket and tossing it into an unlit hearth. Underneath, his black shirt clung to a muscular frame bruised and lacerated along the left rib cage.

"Where was I supposed to run?" Elena countered, her voice rising with furious adrenaline. "Into the sniper's line? Or should I have left a three-year-old to be slaughtered by whoever you’ve made enemies with?"

Matteo didn't blink. He approached her, stopping inches away, his towering frame forcing her to look straight up into his dark, fractured eyes. "They don't want to kill her, Elena. They want leverage. They want to tear me apart piece by piece, and they know she’s the only part of me that still bleeds."

Elena stared at him, horror mingling with sudden comprehension. "Who were those men, Matteo? Who is after her?"

Before he could answer, a harsh beep echoed from the surveillance console. One of the monitors flickered, switching from a static camera of the winding gravel road to a live drone feed displaying four black heat-signatures moving swiftly through the treeline toward the cottage.
