Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Mist

The silence inside the cottage stretched into an agonizing torment. Mia sat up on the sofa, her eyes wide, tears spilling silently down her pale cheeks. She didn't scream; she had learned too early that loud voices brought darkness.
"Elena?" Mia whispered, her voice trembling. "Where's Papa?"
"Papa is working, sweetheart," Elena whispered back, crouching beside her, her fingers white-knuckle tight around the grip of the pistol. "We have to play the quiet game again. Can you do that for me? Hide inside the chest under the window."
Mia obeyed with heartbreaking obedience, crawling into the wooden cedar trunk set against the floorboards. Elena left the lid propped open an inch so the child could breathe, then pressed her back against the adjoining stone wall.
Outside, the first shot cracked through the pine trees. It was followed by the rapid, stuttering burst of automatic fire, then a sickening shriek that cut off abruptly. Luca’s rifle went silent.
Elena’s breathing came in ragged gasps. A silhouette crossed the window pane—tall, thin, carrying a tactical shotgun. The man paused, his shadow stretching across the floorboards toward the trunk where Mia hid.
Elena raised the pistol with both hands, her arms shaking violently. Her finger hovered over the trigger guard. Finger off until you intend to end a life. The advice echoed in Matteo’s rough baritone.
The front door creaked open, slowly swinging inward on rusted hinges. A man stepped through, drenched in mud, his weapon raised, his eyes scanning the corners. He didn't see Elena immediately in the deep recess behind the door.
He turned toward the wooden chest, his boot stepping closer to Mia’s hiding spot.
Elena felt every instinct inside her scream. She stepped out of the shadow, raised the heavy weapon, and pulled the trigger.
The recoil drove her arms back violently, the muzzle flash blinding in the dark room. The shot struck the man in the shoulder, knocking him sideways against the table with a roar of fury. He scrambled to bring his shotgun up, his face twisted in feral hatred.
Elena froze, paralyzed by the horrific finality of what she had done. The man’s finger tightened on his shotgun trigger, aimed straight at her head.
A hand shot out from behind the doorframe, wrenching the barrel upward just as it fired, blowing a massive hole into the cottage ceiling. Matteo hauled the man backward onto the floor, driving his knee into the attacker's throat until a dry snap ended the struggle.

Matteo looked up, chest heaving, his face covered in rain and black mud. "I told you," he gasped out, "never hesitate."
Before Elena could answer, a bright spotlight suddenly washed over the cottage windows from the ocean below, blinding them completely. A loudspeaker roared through the sea mist: Matteo Rossi. Drop your weapons. You are completely surrounded.
