Chapter 15 - The New Ledger

That evening, Julian walked down to the edge of the water alone. The sun was setting over the bay, turning the harbor into a sheet of liquid copper.

He pulled a small leather notebook from his coat pocket—not an antique ledger filled with fraudulent corporate debts, but a clean, blank journal Clara had given him for his thirtieth birthday.

On the first page, Julian wrote a single line:

May 14. We laid the cornerstone for the vocational school today. Twelve apprentices enrolled. None of them carry our name.

He looked up at the water, remembering the young man who had stood in Eleanor's drawing room in a tailored tuxedo, terrified that the world would end if his family's mask slipped. The world had ended—the small, selfish world he had inhabited—and the real one had taken its place.

The air was warm and smelled of salt, diesel, and blooming wild sea grass. Behind him, he heard Clara’s footsteps crunching on the shells along the shoreline.

"Julian," she called softly, smiling as she reached his side. "The community board wants to know if you'll help draft the blueprints for the secondary clinic tomorrow."

"Under one condition," Julian said, closing the book and sliding it into his pocket.

"What's that?"

"No marble," he said, wrapping his arm around her waist as the tide rolled in against the pilings. "Just wood, brick, and windows wide enough to see the street."
