Chapter 8 - The Unscripted Voice

The hum in the room died slowly, like a machine being unplugged. The rustle of silk and clinking of glasses ceased as guests noticed the absence of the formal teleprompter screens.

Julian adjusted the microphone. His voice, when it came through the speakers, lacked the booming, practiced cadence of his father. It sounded clear, human, and unexpectedly quiet.

"Thirty years ago tonight," Julian began, "my father stood in this very room and announced the construction of the Vance Commerce Center. He called it a testament to progress. He called it a victory for the common worker."

In the third row, several older board members nodded in nostalgic approval. Marcus Hayes smiled thinly, crossing his arms.

"He lied," Julian said.

The silence that followed was absolute. Marcus’s smile vanished instantly. Clara, standing two feet behind the lectern, laced her fingers together and kept her chin lifted.

"He did not build it through visionary planning," Julian continued, lifting the yellow envelope for the cameras to see. "He built it by illegally foreclosing on the Mirasol shipping ward, falsifying environmental permits, and withholding eighty-two million dollars in pensions from the longshoremen's union led by Samuel Ortiz."

A collective gasp swept through the room, followed by a sudden burst of frantic whispers. Marcus Hayes surged toward the podium, his face mottled with purple fury. "Julian! Turn that off! Cut the feed!"

Julian did not flinch. "Samuel Ortiz was ruined so that my family could dance in this room tonight. For three decades, we used charitable foundations as a whitewash for theft."
